Ontario Insurance question Sprint ST
Hello fellow Canadians!
Seems I'll be leaving BC this summer and heading for Ottawa.
I would like to know what to expect for insurance premiums for a 2002 Sprint ST.
I've got (mostly) 36 years experience if that matters at all.
Also, what is insurance like for other Triumph's, say a Speed Triple or Tiger.
Once I've settled in a bit, I look forward to meeting other Triumph riders in the area!
Oh, how is Ottawa Goodtime Centre to deal with?
Cheers and thanks.
Mark

For what it's worth...
Well, I live down in the Niagara Peninsula and am paying $967 for a 1994 Sprint 900. Now, I had not had a bike insured for more than 5 years so that bumped up the price a bit and it seems that nearly every model of Triumph is classed as a sport bike, so that adds $200 to the bill. By the way, this is for liability only - no collision or comprehensive. To obtain comprehensive, I had to install an alarm from their list of acceptable units and that will add another $175 to the price. I am insured through Primmum (TD Bank) and their rates were the best out of 5 or 6 that I checked. Also, if you put your car and house with them, they'll knock 10% off your motorcycle insurance.
Best bet is to shop around a lot and ask a lot of questions and don't trust their internet pricing engines. These don't take into account certain factors such as your bike being a sportbike or cruiser.
Hope this helps a bit and watch out for diplomatic plates on cars in the Ottawa area. They drive as if they are immune to traffic laws...and guess what - they are!

Thank you Darthandy. The Niagra Peninsula is a beautiful area! I use to live in Oakville, but would not go back there now. I certainly will be looking around for the right insurer!
Hope you enjoy a great many rides!
Cheers,
Mark

I'm in Toronto and for an '03 Sprint ST I'm paying ~$1000/year for full coverage (1 million public liability / $500 deductible comprehensive) through Rider's Plus. I've been pretty happy with them to deal with.

Obviously, insurance will vary according to the type of coverage you will want and what your driving record is like. i.e. have you had any previous speeding tickets.
Being a Daytona 675 owner, my insurance premiums are perhaps a little higher even though I have a perfectly clean driving record. I deal with Primum and have had the best rate available though them. But then again you will hear some riders complaining about them. I guess like all things, you will need to do a bit of ground work to find the best deal. If you are a member of the Canadian Motorcycle Onwers Association, you can get a discount from Helphard Insurance in Ottawa.
Dealing with the Ottawa Good Time Centre has been a positive experience for me but then again, I have heard stories that were not too pleasant. It is a family owned business, I know the owners and it perhaps helps that just about everyone in the shop knows me. I am treated very well indeed. But a word of advise; if you order parts straight from the parts department and want the service to instal them, make sure that service knows about your order and request. Sometimes the communications between the parts and the services departments are not always 100%. They will do their best to accomodate you however and as they are one of the biggest shops in Ottawa, they can get very busy at times (like around this time in spring).
The Ottawa Riders Association of Triumph is also run through them. So drop by and let them know you are interested.

Thanks Dave and Daytona
I did an online quote with Riders Plus, and came up with about $870 full coverage, so not too bad. I have a clean driving record, and yes I know enough to shop around. Joining the CMA is something I'm already considering, especially if it will help with insurance and other things like running out of gas...which would be just plain dumb.
Since I know a couple of insurance companies apply an insurance surcharge on the Sprint, how accurate do believe the above online quote is?
Is the Ottawa Riders Association of Triumph very active?
Cheers!!

Mark,
That sounds like a good price to me, I think I pay just over $1,000.00 for my 2002 Sprint ST. If you're going to be in Ottawa, check out our website at www.ontariorats.com We have some members from Kingston, Ottawa and upstate NY on our roles.

The Ottawa RAT Pack is mostly active between May and October. We have three official rides sanctionned by Triumph per year and a number of wednesday night gatherings.
I know that they had a meeting in February to discuss the upcoming activities for 2009 and once confirmed, they are usually posted on the Ottawa RAT web site:
http://zoneballistic.com/triumph/
You can also look at some of the suggested local riding routes in one of the sections.

Hootie,
Sounds like your Rider's Plus quote is pretty good, they don't put a surcharge on the Sprint as a sport bike. They broker for Echelon, beware dealing with them can be a bit stressful if anything happens. Last summer someone broke into my garage got the bike about halfway out when they dropped it on my car, and ran. I reported it to the police and Echelon, with Echelon I had to call my report in 3 times (giving them the whole story, police info et.al.) for them to tell me a few days later that they may not cover my claim as I didn't have coverage for vandalism. Their view was the bike could have just been tipped over. A quick threat that they could never prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was not attempted theft coupled with the treat of a lawsuit for selling me the insurance in "bad faith" led to them approving and paying my claim with no difficulties. I called Rider's Plus when I received a customer satisfaction survey about how my claim was handled, blasted them, they were pretty appologetic and recommended that if I ever need to put in another claim to call them directly and let them deal with Echelon. So it did work out in the end, but it was a process. Caveat Emptor
