Great Alpine Way during September???

Am doing a run from Brisbane down to Adelaide bombing down highways (riding with friends on M109's which is my previous bike) early September.

however on the way back, I am looking to find some twistier roads. Is the great Alpine Way do-able in mid-September. I have done some reading and no-one really mentioned weather conditions or road conditions.

Any help??

And while we are at it, what roads would people recommend in Victoria? We will be coming back along the Great Ocean Road and staying at Werribee (doing the zoo), and after that is up in the air. Have to be back in Brisbane on 18th or 19th.

Thanks,
Angus.

Hey Angus.

Watch the police on the GOR. It's not the delight that it once was.

I'd keep following the Princes Highway after Werribee and go through Gippsland and throw a left at Cann River and head toward Bombala and then Cooma. Wonderful road with superb scenery.

This will bring you out just East of Cooma so you can either stay there the night (turn left and the T intersection if you do) or turn right and head down Brown Mountain (oh, the curves) and stay in Bega overnight. This is the Eastern end of the Snowy Mountains highway.

For dessert, after getting back on the Princes Highway just north of Bega, turn left at Bomaderry just north of Nowra (it's about a 200Km run) and do the Kangaroo Valley run through to Robertson and then down the Macquarie Pass to Wollongong.

You could then get to The Putty Road to Singleton and then pick up whatever choice you have to get back to Brisbane. You'll then have ridden some of the best biking roads in OZ in one run.

Another Option

Angus

Linz makes some good recommendations. Another option after leaving the Gong would be to skip up the Pacific Hwy to Port Macquarie, hang a left onto the Oxley Highway and fly up the mountain (heaven on two wheels) to Walcha and then on to Armidale.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I was hoping to squeeze in Putty Road. Always hear Sydney guys talking about it.

And the Oxley was already locked in. I did it last year with some friends when I still had the M109. Very spongy brakes and lots of metal was the result. As soon as I got the Sprint I was trying to convince my mates we needed to do another Oxley run now that I had the Sprint. But babies and pregnancy seem to win these days.

I will even leave Anna at the Gingers Creek restaurant again and do a quick solo blast. he he he

Will do some planning on Google Maps this afternoon and also consult my friends Motorcycle atlas..
