It actually wasn't called that at its release - the opening titles were changed to add the "Episode IV" at the film's first re-release to theaters. If you saw the film when it first came out, it didn't say Episode IV.

Yeah, for real. It never said that at the theaters in 77'. My sister was/is a bookworm geek, and that's the ONLY reason I knew it was the 4 movie in a series of 6 (and didnt care - just wanted ALL the action figures/etc) and I didn't find that out til The Empire Strikes Back hit the screen ...
