picked up my 1996 tropy 900 today and must say i'm very impressed after a 170 mile trip home. after a 650 bmw single it feels very smooth and very planted, few wobbly moments in traffic coz i'm not used to the weight tho!!! one question is tho do the triples all sound rough and rattly when off the throttle? kinda like a realy rattly clutch??
It should sound like a finely tuned diesel rock crusher at idle. If it doesn't sound like a diesel rock crusher, it needs a valve job, and if it doesn't sound like a finely tuned one it needs the alternator bolt replaced.
That's funny. I've owned my '97 Trophy 900 since new, and have had numerous people ask me if it was a diesel if they only heard it at idle. ALL of the early triples (with sand-cast crankcases) sound like that.
at idle it rattles but when under load it doesn't, what worries me tho is when slowing down in traffic at say 20-30mph and you roll the throttle off it sounds like ball bearings in a tin can!! maybe i need earplugs!
When I purchased my first Trophy 900 I was also concerned about the noise at idle. My (British) mechanic used exactly the same words as you "like ball bearings in a tin can" and stating they all sound like that.
I read that it is something to do with the backlash setup in the tranny and not to worry. I put 50,000 km on my bike with no problems.

i'm absolutely loving it! my test drive was after i payed for it, on frosty roads made from concrete in the first 100yds i had turn across and uphill a busy main road then 140miles of motorway
so much smoother than my old F650 which was like riding a jackhammer!!
... and that low-RPM grumble is normal as well. Both my '97 Trophy 900 and my '98 Tiger have a sort of 'rattle' between 2500-3000 RPM that is dependent on load. No worries lad. As they say, 'they all do that'.
well as it wasnt raining for a change, i put another 140 miles on her today! starting to enjoy the handling through the sweepers, although twisty country roads will take some time! flying machine compared to the old single i had!!
Trust me, a well-ridden Trophy 3 can hang with most anything in the twisties, unless it's an all-out supersport ridden by someone with no concern for life and limb.
My Trophy has always been noisy the fairing chucks some noise back at you as well 130,000miles still not burning oil and starting on first push of button. Look after it and it will look after you.

think i've found out the source of the noise.... turns out the previous owner, who told me a new chain and sprocket had been fitted, had fitted just that, a chain and sprocket and not the front one as it its a big job to do...... i was in the bike shop today for a new front tyre fitted and the mechanic pushed the bike into the workshop you could hear the chain clinking over the front sprocket. and he said i bet thats noisey when you roll off the throttle!!! under load there is no noise as the chain is held tight against the teeth but when you roll the throttle off the chain clatters about causing lots and lots off noise.
just to update on the source of the noise, i finally got fed up with it last week and decided to change the chain and sprockets, after 2hrs of stripping and oil draining i got to the source of the problem...... turns out that the previous owner hadn't tightened the bolt holding the front sprocket. its actually worn the splines on the sprocket to sharp points it was moving that much luckily the output shaft seems to be ok. anyhoo banged it all back together and all is quiet!!
Yikes! Its good you found that. It would eventually ruin the shaft.
If the front sprocket splines are worn very bad I would put a fresh sprocket on at some point,even tight it can move around under load and maybe cause problems. They arent that expensive.
PO may have tightened it. Was there a lock washer on there when you took it a part? It's a fitted flat washer. Once the nut is tightened, the washer is bent up against a flat side of the nut to keep it from backing off.
My 900 made the same noise until I drilled out the exhaust a little. I think the stock exhaust is so quite you hear a lot more internal engine noise at lower speeds.
