hello, new poster!

ive only passed my test about 3 weeks, the following weekend, went out to 'look' at a bike, ended up buying it there and then, man shopping but maybe i was too hasty.

its a 2004 daytona 600, it rode fine for the first weekend, then a week later i went to fire it up and it was dead, i tried a few times but the more i did, the less reaction i got each time. i trickle charged it and thought that was the last of it, until i went to buy a new battery and ended up being recovered by a truck.

a friend who knows more about it than me has been having a look, he has concluded that the battery isnt being charged by the engine, its slowly draining, even with the headlights disconnected.

its annoying because i live and work 300miles away during the week so i can only fiddle with it at weekends, ive pretty much missed the last 2 weekends suitable weather this year for riding but thats besides the point, since replacing the battery it hasnt yet failed to start, but this is only a matter of time as the battery is still draining whilst its running. any help?

dan

Look for threads about the regulator rectifier. That's probably your problem. You may also have stator problems. There's been lots of discussion about those two components lately.

Do a static draw test to see if you have a drain somewhere. Remove the negative battery clamp and connect your volt meter inline between the clamp and the post. You should read no higher than .01 amps as long as the bike is electronically stock (no alarm).

If it reads higher, start pulling your fuses until it drops to normal to isolate your problem.

Taken it to a garage because id only make a mess of things.

Basically the left hand circular engine cover looked suspicious and there was silicone everywhere. Upon further inspection the cover had been removed then replaced with no gasket. Beneath that the generator has burnt out and taken the reg/rec with it.

It seems as if the previous owner has located the problem hence the removed cover, then decided to get rid,

I bought it from chapel in le frith car sales but it's not a proper dealer as such and was sold more as a private sale so I have no idea where I stand

Any advice would be appreciated

This pertains to cars but I'm sure it applies to motorcycles equally

Contact them via the link at the top of the page and ask for advice on how to proceed.

If you otherwise like the bike, then get it repaired and try to get the costs covered by the seller - have you even contacted them and asked what they are prepared to do for you?

Also, familiarize yourself with this - http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/reports/676408/oft1241.pdf
If dealer has premises that indicate he is a dealer/trader, and he sold the bike out of that premise, not his home, then he is a trader and subject to the requirements regardless of how he tried to portray the sale
I'm assuming this is your Daytona listed on this page - http://www.chapelenlefrithcarsales.com/previously-sold-cars
Don't see how they can profess that to be a private sale!!

I'm putting up a video in a few minutes on the stator removal and I did one on the rectifier replacement if that helps. The Stator is 120.00 the gasket is 22.00 a used R/R is 60.00 the new wire harness for new R/R is 13.00. little over 200.00 you got it fixed.
That sucks though that someone would do that. Sorry dude. If you want to fix it yourself PM me and I will walk you through it.

Yes, they're a great bike....my reg/rec & stator just went for the first time at 22K miles. I'm not very mechanically minded either although I'm always willing to have a go at something.....it was surprisingly easy to do really, the hardest part was just getting the cover off/on, everything else was very straightforward.

Enjoy the bike!!
