Had to break down and get a new set yesterday and went with the Metz Z6's. Heard good things about them so thought I'd give them a try. Will let you know how things go. So far just the long way home from the dealer initial impressions are. These are comparing to the BT57's.
Only have 15 miles so far and not scuffed in but turn in seems a bit harder but once in is stable and stays to a line. Where the old would fall in and I'd have to counter-counter steer to hold the same line in the same corner.
Doesn't seem to "track" or follow road imperfections.
The Pilot Road 2 is still an excellent all rounder with really nice handling and great wet and dry grip and good longevity.
The Pilot Road 3 is just better than an already great tyre.
Hit a patch of diesel on the ride home. Scary as heck, I was passing around a slight bend and hit a 20ft long splash of the stuff in the middle of the road. Bike did the freakiest wiggle, I was leaning just a bit and the rear slid, then turned the front into the skid and back again in what seemed like a slow "S." Later on the front seemed to slip again while slowing down for an off ramp. The tires (Conti Motions) are still good, right? It should just where off where the diesel touched?
the diesel residue needs to be removed from the tires .. at home get some dawn soap and soap up the tires really good and scrub with rag .. then hose off for a few min .... then let dry .. check tires for any residue .. if there is non enjoy
Just had to update my last addition to this forum. Originally had Bridgestone BT020 (crap tire!), and BT021 (better, but very vanilla!) and I've only just recentlly (as in two weeks ago) switched to the Pirelli Angel ST's. Wow! I should've done this AGES ago! Best tire that I've ever had! Talk about bringing the bike back to life! Hey DaveM! I finally see what you were saying about more of a "V" profile. Excellent! Now Iäve got to work on keeping my license, 'cause the curves will never be the same! ...and that's a VERY good thing, indeed! ;-)
I just removed my Conti Road Attacks after 8,617 miles. A lot of that was super slab, which is hard on tires. Plus I live in the flat lands, so overall, I'm impressed with the mileage I got from them!
I have a new set of Pilot Road 3's that are going on tomorrow! I can't wait to see what a difference they make!
I've got a few hundred miles on the PR2's now, and what a difference. The grip in corners is excellent indeed. I'm very happy with the tires and they certainly inspire confidence.
I have over 8k sport-touring miles on my PR2s, and the rear is just beginning to look a bit squared. I still have a couple of thousand miles left in that tire.
Just got back from a nice trip(posted a small description in the trip section) with a fresh set of Storms on. Never had them before and liked them pretty much from the start. The only negative I can think of is that there is a sensitivity to tar strips. On nice clean pavement they do really dig in nice. Edge to edge is no problem and I was loaded down enough to feel the difference in the bike.
I've had the PR3s on for almost a year now, had to replace the rear early because of a big screw, but that's another story.....
What I am noticing is the front is wearing backwards from what I'm used to, lol. Center almost seems new, but the sides are wearing. I guess I use the softer compound enough
Replaced the PR3s with.......PR3s. I was able to get about 7.5k miles out of the rear, front still had 3k+ left on them. I really like these tires. I feel I would get better miles if, I left a little food on the plate, lay off the throttle, and stop driving on Maine roads.
I'm thinking about buying a set of bridgestone S20's. Does anyone here have experience with them? How do they fare when compared to let's say Q2's (mileage, handling etc.)
Uraberg I think Coroja has the S20's (reported to be great tyres) on one of his bikes why not PM him?
With my first set of Pilot Road 3's I am stunned to report they lasted me longer than any tyre in the last ten years on any bike I have owned in that time.
10,000kms!!!! on my Sprint GT.
So naturally I fitted them again also at a great bargain price.
Tell me, at the end of tire life for the PR3's, how did they handle?
I am asking, because every "long" lasting tire I have tried, wears in a distinct "V" shape (front tire) at about 3/4 of total tire life. As a result, I am really not enjoying the last few 1000 miles on those tires. With this being the case, I figured I might as well go back to tires that don't necessarily last me that long, but will give me just about the same feel through their whole tire life. (The Q2's did that for me...)
The tyre was still not quite to the wear bars in the centre but the outside edges (more the right) was down to the bars and beyond and gave that horrible feeling of tipping in at a very fast rate.
So the answer is yes they wear in a Vee and the last few miles are not enjoyable if you ride in a spirited manner in the corners like many of us do
Just recently put some Dunlop Road Smart II's on my Sprint. I was looking at the PR2 and 3s but then found a smoking deal on the Dunlops that couldn't be passed up. I can only compare them to the stock tires that were replaced. Though I know you're supposed to take it easy on new tires as they can be a bit slick, they were scrubbed edge to edge by the time I got home. Couldn't help it.
The stock front had been severely cupped, and the turn in was so bad I found myself counter steering in certain corners. Odd feeling. So I expect any tire would have been a dramatic improvement. These tires feel to be pretty neutral handling. No complaints. But not enough miles to report on wear yet.
At 10.5k miles, I replaced my pilot road front. I could have squeezed another 1500 miles out of it, but honestly I was not enjoying the ride anymore. After 7k miles or so, the wear on the tire is so pronounced that the handling turned abysmal.
My rear tire will be replace tomorrow, at almost 5k miles. this was a pirelli diablo that was actually a 170/60. The 170 does not fit the rim on the 1050 sprint very well, and as such, it was a terrible tire to ride on.
The new tires are bridgestones S20. Jakewilson has a very good deal on them right now, and I have decided that I prefer a lower mileage tire that will (hopefully) maintain its good handling properties throughout its life.
just took the bike to the dealer to have them look over my pr3's and there still doing great .. perfect wear.. we upped the front pressure from 32.5 to 35 and the rears from 32.5 to 33 . 12,000 miles plus and still have half the tread left ill post pics later ( reason for the front pressure is to reduce the small flat spot that is starting to form .. its just a tiny one .. took it out for a spin and it still handles wonderfull
Yikes! Those are some pretty low pressures for street riding.
A note for diy tire mounters; my pirelli diablo rear has incredibly stiff sidewalls. It was a bitch to mount, and i actually had to cut it off today.
As a matter of fact, i had sprung a bit of a leak today (right before i wanted to replace it anyway :O) and it had 18lbs of pressure in it by the time i got home. I never even noticed it!
Continental Motions.
Changed both front and back at 8700 miles.
Back was worn very evenly and was down to the wearbars.
Front had life left - maybe 2000 miles - but they are cheap enough that I replaced both.
Have never had an issue where they felt unsafe or unstable.
I just wanted to post up about my experience last weekend involving my 05 VFR and a set of Pilot Road 3 tires. even with them inflated to about 34 front and 36 rear, they did fantastic!
I did a trip of about 250 miles with some friends which consisted of two Ducati 848's a BMW S1000rr and a K1300HP and me. We did everything from freeway to canyons and mountains. I was hanging right up with the bikes, not issue. I reached a new level of cornering ability and the tires just simply stuck! Not once did I feel loose and I had absolute confidence in the tires even when I was keeping up with the S1000 and the 848 ridden by a California Superbike School guy. I have scraped the pegs on both my VFR and my RS with these tires and I see no reason to change to any other tire.
I've only had one clencher of a moment since I had my Pilot Road 3's fitted, I think it was more the fact that the road surface changed while I was cornering through a large roundabout than the actual tyre itself. Now I'm just trying different tyre pressures to see what is the best for commuting/out for a fang through the hills. 34 seems to be fine for the front, 33-ish seems to be good for the rear.
pr3 ... i run on my 955 sprint 32 front and 33 rear.. now that they started to flatten out i upped the pressures in the rear to 36 and 35 front just re rounds them out.. im running in the cold and rain at night and they are still solid...
