:faceplantI have had a round of sterioid shots in my shoulders and it settled down my right shoulder. I also had a pack of oral steroids as well, but my left sholder is extremely painful at night which is when you feel a rotator cuff tear the most. My orthopod wants me to get a MRI and I will be after tonight. It is looking like I may have torn my rotator cuff. I picked the right time of year for it at least I got to ride all year and I will only be off the bike for a short time if I need surgery.

I think the big ride prompted my shoulders to be inflamed but the damage was done allitle while back when I hoisted or muscled the Rocket up right. I did not let it fall over when I was stopped and after getting it up right my left shoulder wass sore for weeks. I may have torn a segment of my Rotatator cuff back then.

If I did I will be getting surgery which involves getting at least one stay screwed into the bone. Stays have a heavy ethibond type suture attached to them. Essentially acting as an anchor or a man made tendon of sorts for muscle. I have attached some photos of stays or anchors.

i know most of you will not be interested in this thread...but to be honest it is taking my mind of the discomfort and the exhaustion I am feeling right now. :D So I thought I would write about it. If I have to get the surgery I will be back riding in a short time. I have already started planning several IBA rides for next year.

I'm always interested in modern medicine, ESP the procedures for repairing wear and tear on our bodies.
Keep us posted....can you get GoPro footage?

I think your 'Wing is too heavy, Lee. You should trade it for something smaller like Ride's new scooter.

You might have to learn to live without the espresso maker, though.

Steroid shots? Fungal meningitis is next.

:) As some of you may remember, I had my right shoulder joint replaced with a shiny new Titanium one a couple of years back. Modern surgical practices are akin to sorcery as far as I'm concerned, and if I was you, I wouldn't worry one iota. My new shoulder feels spectacularly good these days, and my life is transformed. Get it fixed and you'll never look back!

I've got bothersome joints. Hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, you name it! Hauling cars has been tough on my little body!
I'm sure someday I'll get some replacements, but for now exercise helps, building up the muscles to take more of the load off the bones and joints.
So far, nobody has cut into my body intentionally. (There was an incident with a chainsaw years ago).....
I'll avoid surgery until the last possible moment!!!!

If you have shoulder pain, do you sleep with your arm sticking out above your head? If you do, quit it. Worked for me.

I woke one night, sleeping on my back with my arm over my head, and had an incredible pain in my arm pit. It took almost a year for the damn thing to calm down. I've got bad shoulders from too many years on the farm with a post hole digger. And, both shoulders separated in accidents.

I'm probably going to have to have something done before too long.

Thank you everyone....I was surprised at all the responses. I was so tired last night it was a bit of a rant..like I said earlier to distract myself from the pain and exhaustion.

One big benefit to working in a hospital and furthermore being a director is the ability to expedite a process when needed. I had my primary care physician also the chief MD of the hospital write me orders for my MRI...which he didi...he is a great doc and person. He also wrote me a script for some ibuprofen 800mg and they are working well for now.

I got on the schedule at 2pm today. After it was done I sat with the radiologist and he explained his findings. It seems I have two tears, fluid and the starting of some atrophy of some of the groups. I have good range of motion still but it is not getting better. I will be talking with my orthopod and see what he recommends... I was hoping not to get surgery but it is looking like it will have to be.....again thanks everyone....

I feel for you, Buddy. Last year I fell asleep behind the wheel driving my wife's truck. I had the pleasure of flying in Life Flight and spending 3 nights in the trauma center. Among other things, I had several cracked ribs that kept me up nights for weeks. It's still a mystery to me why things like that seem to hurt even worse at night... but they sure do.

As Tremor said... good luck, and I hope surgery isn't required. :)

One beneficial thing is Mrs. Lee is a PTA....she is very helpful ....I am going to go out for a short ride Saturday...I need to get some exercise and clear my head. I noticed today that my range of motion is good I am starting to feel pain now even during the day....
FYI being in that damm MRI was the closest I would imagine to a coffin..did not like it at all.

I had a 12 hour day at work..and now I am exhasuted...so I am hitting the sack. good night all.

Sorry to hear about your injury Lee.....best of luck on the rebuild:)

Thanks Jolly....I actually slept well last night. I took my Ibiprofin and the Mrs. taped my should with Kinisio tape...If I can get a few nights sleep I will be feeling good again...at least to I know if I have to get surgery.
I hope you feel lots better soon Lee. I have a Left Knee I broke in 92 in 6 places and it is all original with no replacement nor hardware inside but I know some day it will have to be worked on. I dread that day because it will lay me up for quite some time. Get well soon man and do not push it too hard. One day at a time. :)

git er done!

I lived with pain in my left shoulder for over 20 years. Then two years ago, I had a nasty fall from my 27-spd road bike that forced me to go for an MRI. The surgeon said you have a "massive" tear in the rotator cuff along with what appears to be scarring from an old injury. I told him the scarring was likely from a bad fall I'd had on the ski slopes many years ago. He said had I gotten that fixed properly then I could have been pain free for all this time.

Bite the bullit an get the surgery. Mine was done in September 2010 and I was back riding, (motorcycles and bicycles) again in six weeks.

As others have said, "get serious about your rehab" as that is THE key to successful surgeries.

I'm in the same boat. Have a full tear in my left shoulder, will be going under the knife in about 10 days, so no riding for probably 3 months after. Would love to ride today or tomorrow, but with the hurricane approaching, rain is imminent. Hopefully, I can get out next weekend for a couple of good rides. Good luck!

Last December I similarly injured my right shoulder but thought the pain would go away on its own. But it just got worse and worse until I finally was unable to sleep at night. At times, such as when I reached around back to close a door I'd just pass through, the pain was so sharp and severe that I would nearly drop to my knees.

In June I had surgery to reattach my rotator cuff (three pins were required). Since then I have been in physical therapy and also had a second procedure - a manipulation - to break free some scar tissue. I have another few weeks of therapy and then should be able to continue all my stretching and strengthening exercises at home.

While not perfect, I've got enough mobility to be completely functional. More importantly, I've no more pain.

Have the surgery!

My left shoulder was busted up in bicycle crash and was out of action for quite some time. That put added workload on my right shoulder that when all was said and done ended up more touchy than my left.
I'm lucky though, 16 years later when they get tender, a few days of repeating two simple exercises learned in re-hab make things better.:)

My left shoulder was busted up in bicycle crash . . . . . 16 years later when they get tender, a few days of repeating two simple exercises learned in re-hab make things better.:)
Why suffer; :headscratch just do those two simple exercises two or three days a week and be pain free on a regular basis.
