Hi everyone. I'm a newbee here. Just ordered my new Triumph Speedmaster (Matte Black) and want to get Short/Long TORS to beed up the sound a bit.

Do i have to do some sort of 'running in' before i change to Triumph TORS?

Also, do the short and long TORS sound the same<

Thanks for your feedback.

I can't tell you the difference in sound between the short and long tors, however, I can tell you that there is no run in period required. Many dealers sell new America/Speedys with TORS already installed. You will probably need the dealer to remap the ignition profile to richen it up.

+1 on remap...you will need that. my friend says sometimes i still run rich and he smells it. i have remap and long tors...

my dealer said you might want to wait after the first service/run in period.
which i did. people do typically wait until after run in/first service to do that...not saying you can't though i dont know enough to comment on if you can't :)

It's understandable that more mature riders would want something more muted and dignified. I'm sure when i get older I'll be doing something similar. However, since I'm only 66 yrs old I bought myself a set of Bub's. Listening to my Ipod while riding mutes the roar enough for me. hahaha

Many suggest (including myself), waiting a while to install the new pipes, that way you at least know what you had vs what you will have and can appreciate those hard earned dollars spent on the upgrade. I personally love my TORS, had them installed at 700 miles and I'm glad I did.

Thanks for your feeback guys. I was going for the TORS since they are not TOO loud. I like the sound of the BC Bombers. Are they much louder than the TORS? Doesn't seem to be that much of a difference on the Vids posted on You Tube. A nicer deeper sound.

When you live in the middle of the best motorcycle roads in the country, have motorcycle riding weather all year long, and have two great motorcycles, you spend many, many hours riding.

When you ride you either have to think or listen to music. Thinking gives me a headache, so I listen to music. Actually I can still hear my Bub's while I'm listening to my music and they sound great. Especially at full throttle going through the two lane twisties. Life is good when you're retired.

CrazyTrain, I lived in Northern Italy for a year and remember just how fantastic those roads were. It was one of the few times that I didn't have a motorcycle (I had an Alfa Julietta Sprint), which was a calculated decision on my part. The Italians seem to be crazy drivers, but what I finally realized is that most of them are very skilled, but very aggressive, and they just drove by different rules that I understood. So the protection of 4 wheels and body work made me feel much more secure. And the Alfa was almost as much fun as a motorcycle.

I've had 3 Triumphs with their TORs. The TORs for the Bonnie made it sound just like the classic pea shooters. The TORs for the Rocket are outrageous. I had to walk way from the bike to carry on a conversation. They're not as loud as the Jardines bit the sound quality is kick-ass. The short TORs for the T-Bird are fairly quiet at idle but they come alive pretty nicely under acceleration.

The thing to remember is that if you go with ANY aftermarket exhausts, the stock tunes will more than likely not be optimal. Then you either need to spend significant bucks to get it re-tuned for the new exhaust or settle for an OEM or someone else's custom tune that may not optimal for your bike. You can always get the new exhaust dyno tested after you install them and they may turn out to be OK. But if they're not, you're screwed. Considering how much these exhaust systems cost, this doesn't seem like a good outcome.

Makes a lot of sense. You've convinced me that TORS are the way to go. If I get bored of them I can always change them. Now to decide long or short.....though I'm more inclined to go with the short. My bike arrives in Malta on Monday 19th. Can't wait! Going to be a 'surprise' since I'm getting the matte black option and haven't managed to see a decent picture in that colour. Good times.

Hence why I went with TORS exhaust pipes, had the dealer install at the first service and also update the mapping which was created by Triumph. Loading the new map was free with the exhaust and install...I think it was around $500 in total just for the exhaust and install.

If I may "pipe" in here, (pun intended), I'm kinda in the deciding process of aftermarket exhaust for my '09 America. I'm up in the air between the BC Bombers and the Cocktail Shakers. I've viewed many Youtube clips, but it's difficult to know what they sound like unless you hear them in real life. I love the sound of the Shakers, but I like the look of the Bombers. To me, the Bombers sound a little more mellow than the Shakers. At least in the clips I've seen/heard. Is this just my perception, poor recording/audio or do the Bombers actually sound more similar to the Shakers than what I perceive? I don't want to get some and then be disappointed. So, who swears by the Bombers...anyone???

When I bought my 2011 America I loved the bike, but hated the sound. Somewhere I read that it was described as sounding like a sewing machine, and I could not get that phrase out of my head. I bought the long TORS and found that they make my bike sound like what I want a motorcycle to sound like, but honestly, for me they are still a bit TOO loud. If there was some way to tamp them down just a bit it would be perfect. I was told that they add about 10% to the horsepower of this bike, but I never noticed any difference. I think that because they are louder than stock, they make the bike seem to have more power. I still own my stock pipes, but I am sticking with the TORS.

Congrats on your new bike!!! As has been said, they do instal these pipes right off the showroom floor. The first Speedmaster I ever rode was a carbed one with TORs installed during a dealer demo event. That sound, along with the character of the bike did it for me. I knew someday I'd own one.
I put the short TORs on my 07. I would have preferred the long ones as I like the look, but I got a screaming deal on the short ones. I did remove the washers that were tack welded in the inlets, a common mod which they say makes them sound a bit deeper. The short TORs are slightly louder than the long ones of course, a few more inches of baffle is why. I'm very happy with the sound of these short ones, they have the traits I was interested in; at idle they're barely more noticeable over stock, (I leave for work early and have close neighbors,) they have a nice bark to em as you twist the throttle, but most importantly to me, at cruising speeds they are actually very quiet until you really twist the throttle. I can't even hear them at 60mph, which is exactly what I wanted.
They don't have the flow like the British Customs pipes, but I really wasn't after outright power. So the question is, how loud do you want them to be.

These are the ones I just had installed on my 2012 Speedmaster:

The Stainless Rides are priced similarly to the other pipes out there - I purchased from Fast Eddy and had them at my door in less than a week. I really like the purr and grumble of these -- not too loud, not too quiet. I also got the air injection kit and airbox removal kit done on the bike.

Once I get the bike back from the shop (it's still their waiting for a replacement starter relay switch that went bad :( ), I'll do my best to record it and upload.

I've got a 2011 Speedmaster that I had SHORT TOR pipes installed on by the dealer shortly after I bought the bike. Even though they sound better than the "sewing machine" stock mufflers, I'm still not happy with the sound. The short TOR's have a fairly high pitched pow-pow-pow sound reminiscent of a four stroke dirt bike. I've seen and listed to some of the Emgo Dunstall replica videos on youtube and will probably go that route.
