EFI or Carby

Hi everyone I am a noob. I currently ride a Yamaha xvs 650 classic with no mods. I'm still on my p's and go to my blacks in october (I live in Australia). I am hoping to be the proud owner of a Triumph America 08 model after this point but here lies the problem. The EFI models are just comming out here and look very tempting BUT.... I have been told that if I was planning to change my pipes to anything but triumph aftermarket pipes I should still go carby and change the jets instead of EFI and re-map as the map would most likely be 'not perfect' and in the long run ruin my engine.

Any thoughts???

At the end of the day i want to change the countershaft sprocket to 18 or 19 teeth, change the pipes, change the air filter and change a few other things for style, comfort and cosmetics.

I sat on one today, I had to try so hard not to buy it on the spot.

mongle, Welcome to the forum.

I'd suggest the EFI as in the long run it should be better.

EFI and a TuneBoy will give you far better precision carbs & jets. As far as ruining the engine goes, somebody's feeding you some hardcore disinformation. Throwing in the Triumph off-road tune with some random set of pipes & a K&N is probably about the same as dialing in your jets with a plug chop yourself. Not perfect, but close enough. Setting your air:fuel ratio & fuel map with a TuneBoy is closer to having a set of carbs custom built for your motor. There is a level of control available that is simply not there with analog parts. EFI has been around a long time; most of the bugs are gone.

Cheers,
-Kit

Thankyou all very much. I suspected EFI was better and more accomodating, but when you don't know much, a confident person can make one question oneself. Believe it or not this person was a dealer at a dealership so I suspect he just wants to get rid of the carbs to make way for the efi's!!!

Thanks again and i'll keep you posted on other stuff I find out.
