Electrical Question Re: Battery Jump

Hello,

I must first admit to being a dumb a$$ before getting on to my question. This a.m. I needed to jump off my bike due to an aging battery and a long telephone conversation with my ignition in the "on" position.

I connected the cables crossed to my car but never turned the car on. there was a small spark, the cables got hot, then I removed them. After that the bike/batter was more dead than before and didn't want to jump when properly connected.

What have I damaged? No need to sugar coat things, I smell a tow coming on.

Thanks in advance,

-B

When you say "connected the cables crossed" I take that to mean that you connected your car battery "positive" to the bike battery "negative", and so forth. Right?
If so, your bike battery is probably toast. Someone else will have to answer about the shape of your bike voltage regulator and ECM and stuff you may or may not have depending on your model.
Don't know if anything in your car (alternator or voltage regulator) could have gotten zapped since it was off, but I think it would be prudent to have it checked out.

Hope this answers some questions.

Walt,

Thanks for the input. I used this post to avoid letting my shop know my stupidity might bring some business. Anyway, they told me that more likely than not, I blew an ignition fuse or at worse the ignition. My mechanic (for things I don't/ought-not do myself) says the regulator and/or stator on my 1995 Speed Triple is probably fine. Car's apparently fine. Here's to hoping for the best case scenario for the bike. Thanks for chipping in.

Positive to positive, negative to negative. You're lucky that you didn't cook something in the car too, not to mention yourself.
