Just because light is on does not necessarily mean it is in limp-home mode. It just means that a sensor has detected a fault & has registered on the ECM which trips the MIL light. It will only be in limp-home mode if the fault is still present, Indeed in this case since it runs fine after replacing the battery, it evidently isn't in limp-home mode, therefor the fault that set the lamp initially is not currently present.
Your MIL could be associated with a number of things - a low battery voltage for example (which it clearly had since it was changed out)
Yes, if you do three complete warm-up/cool down cycles the lamp should go out -
provided the original fault is no longer active.
The fault code will remain stored for 40 complete warm-up cycles however to allow you to retrieve them later if you require. The fault codes can be retrieved by your dealer.
