I posted this in the Classic Triple section which was probably the wrong area so I figured I should check here.

So my question(s) are:

Is there a way to remove the whole ignition module from the upper triple tree of a Thunderbird Sport? The little bits fastening the ignition to the upper tree don't appear to be bolts of any type, or at least fit any sockets I have.

Also, is there a trick to removing the lower steering bearing? I've tried heating it and "walking" it off with screwdrivers but neither has worked. Also, if I pooch it, how expensive are they to replace? I'm in the process of prepping to have some parts including the triple tree powder coated.

Assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Re. the ignition switch: The switch is held in by "security bolts" to prevent an easy theft of the bike. These security bolts are designed so that they torque up to the required Nm and then the heads break off.

Fyi, I thought about replacing the ignition wiring on my Sprint as the ignition switch loom had been fitted too tight and the wires started to break - the only way (for me) appeared to be to take the top yoke to the local Triumph dealer to have the bolts drilled out, etc....

GeoffE got it spot on - they are called shear bolts and as described, the heads shear off when assembled.
The newer bikes seem to be assembled with these at a pretty low torque (indeed some Sprint owners have been complaining about them loosening completely & dropping out!) - you may be lucky & able to cut a slot in them and use a screwdriver. Otherwise you need to drill them out. After you get to where the ignition will release, you should be able to turn what's left out with your fingers, or at worst vize, grips.
You can get replacement shear bolts from the dealer, or just use some regular M6 socket cap screws.

That's exactly what I did. used a dremmel and cut a slot in them both then easily turned them out. After powder coating and re assembly, I could always re-use them and grind them down if need be to maintain their security feature.

I'm still dealing with the removal of the bearing though....

Try pressing the stem through the bottom yoke.
