summer's comin and my bike's not runnin!

Hello there fellow riders!

I've had a Daytona 650 for more than a year and it ran great when I bought it (used) but lately I've been wishing I never bought it. Long story short, I have major electrical problems. The bike won't charge the battery anymore. The battery may be bad but that's not the problem. I hooked a voltmeter to the leads of the battery wires and saw that it was about 13 volts at idle and DROPPED further to around 11 volts when twisting the throttle.

Naturally, sometimes my speedo goes out then shows 188. My bike is starving electrically. Now my question is, how do I go about figuring out which part is bad?

This is a start http://www.dansmc.com/electricaltesting.htm

Then try this http://www.megageek.com/mcelectric/index.htm

Your local library will have various manuals which will help also.

Summers coming ... get her done!

I looked at what you gave me, John and it sort of made sense to me. I'm starting to learn this stuff. So far I figure it could be either or a combination of, the stator, the regulator/rectifier and the wiring.

Its hard to test the wires since they are all covered and I don't know which goes where. I have access to the wires leading from what seems to be the stator to the reg/rec but I'm not sure what they should read. There are 2 big brown wires, I assume they are the AC, a black one (ground?) and a red/white one which I don't know what it is. I suppose I'll look up more on this.

I was wondering if someone on here would know the Daytona 600/650 better and they could give me some quick answers. It would sure save me a lot of time.

I think I will need the service manual. Is the service manual the same for the 650 as for the 600 at least as electrics is concerned?

Does anyone on here have one?

I got a service manual off of ebay, its for the daytona 600 03-04 but the electrical setup is the same as on the 650.

Anyway, that helped a lot, I was able to identify the rectifier and I now understand the electrical system better. After playing around with the voltmeter I found that the voltage drop originates from the stator.

At idle connecting on any of the 3 brown wires it shows me about 9 volts AC (9 volts? isn't that low???) Maybe the voltmeter read it wrong. But when I rev the engine, it would drop to 7 and lower. So, I think my stator is bad. I'm gonna do some more research online, but I think I narrowed it down. Gonna be 3 weeks until I get a stator once I order one but if all is well I'll be enjoying my bike again not too long from now.

Seeing other people ride around in the nice weather really makes me miss my bike.

Don't get too cheap and NOT replace the battery. Bike electrics are generally light in their resilience to other failures. And a battery is relatively cheap (and will take ore short term abuse should the stator not be the only problem). You may find that other bikes use the same alternator parts (in the case of some 'classics', Kawi alternators are the same). Once you know what yours look like, watch ebay and search for the part numbers you have on the units (or search for specialists on those manufacturers) versus just the Triumph part numbers. The web is a wonderful place.

Another Site

You might condsider looking @ the Daytona600.org site as there are a couple of threads on the problem and there is someone on there who was doing rebuilds on those parts.
