I experienced the same concern shortly after picking up my Speed Four. Basically it came down to improper adjustment of the shift lever. I noticed that the lever was too low and due to my riding position, after upshifting, my boot would not allow the lever to return to its resting position. I would attempt to upshift and the shift lever felt loose, at which time I would try once again and take my foot lower resulting in a sucessful upshift. The lever can be re-adjusted quite easily by removing the nut and bolt (the lever will not come off unless you remove the bolt as there is a notch in the splined shaft that the bolt rests in), pulling the lever off of the shaft and adjusting to your riding position, then re-secure using the same bolt and nut. Since making this adjustment on my bike the concern has never re-occurred. I hope this will help you with your concern.
