big problems with electrical? HELP PLS

went up to bear creek (in CO) on a solo ride today and had no problems until I was heading home then it went to ****. First my gauges kept turning off and on, then I decided to stop to see if it was a short with the wires going into them and it wasn't. Then I tried to start it back up and the battery is dead after I had been riding for about three hours. So I think it must be the stator and I was able to push start it and drive it home, but I had to keep the rpm's pretty high otherwise it wanted to stall out. I made it home finally and when I parked it I notice that there is a ton of smoke coming out of the storage under the rear seat. The Ecu was smoking up a storm. What kind of prolems am I looking at? If I put a new ecu on it will it burn it up right away? Can I buy a used one that will work? Could the stator still be trashed to why was the battery dead? Any help is greatly appreciated. The bike I am talking about is a 2002 Triumph daytona 955i. If anybody had similar problems or can help me out I wouldn't be able to thank you enough if it solves the problem. I have never had problems with this bike until today which is the first time I have had it out this season for any length of time.

Oh if I can use used parts (ECU) and someone has them please email me w/price info at kmartin955@gmail.com

Hard to tell without a couple of readings, but let's try this for a possible scenario:
If your voltage regulator failed, your alternator could be running wide open, frying your battery, and when that finally gave up the ghost and could absorb no more current, the voltage went up enough to toast your ecu. Easy to see if this is the case - a quick voltage check would tell what sort of voltage you're getting, and anything above about 14.5 is bad.
If you're REALLY lucky, ecu may well work when everything else returns to normal.
Don't you just hate it when a perfectly lovely ride turns to crap? Good luck, let us know what you find.

Been there - symptoms identical. The speedo shuts off when the battery volts are too low.
Regulator is shorted I presume - it is a finned assembly located vertically on the rear subframe under the passenger seat. I believe you may be confusing that with the ECM which is mounted on the front of the battery box.
The smoke is most likely coming from the wires from stator to rectifier/regulator. There is good chance that the stator will also be cooked as it is (likely) supplying current into dead-shorted regulator. Unfortunate effect is that if the rect/reg fails it often takes the stator with it. You may also have to replace the sub-harness between the stator & regulator if the cable is fried. (if it's a 2002 model, there was actually a recall on the original harness which is laced into the main harness assembly - the recall supplied an auxiliary harness of thicker gauge wires)
I'd be most surprised if the ECM is bad but again, I think you have a case of mistaken identity regarding the ECM vs. the Regulator/Rectifier.

These parts are VERY expensive from OEM - try http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/

If you have an ohm meter you can check the rectifier/regulator assembly - unplug both connectors of the rect/reg from the harness then check in turn between each of the three yellow wires in the three pin plug to the red, then the black of the 4 pin plug (the two reds & two blacks will purposely already be connected together anyway so pick either one for test). If any of the yellow wires reads short to either red or black, then your regulator is toast - it's not repairable. Also check from the red to black - that should not read short either.

Here's a reference thread for you - http://www.triumphrat.net/daytona-de...-heatsink.html

See the note in post #3 regarding the harness cable recall. You can buy that part separately if it wasn't already done or you can lobby your dealer to give it to you if you provide the VIN.
Note that my regulator/rectfier is in a slightly different position from yours - mine is custom mounted because it's on an early model subframe, part of custom swap. But the actual part is still an '02+ part so that should help identify your rectifier/regulator for you. Pull your stator cover & inspect the stator - I would expect it to be burned too.

Go look on ebay, they have good prices, and stay away from the dealer...VERY $$$...Just start checking wires and find out what is burned...

Been a while since I last posted & was surprised to see the same problem that has mine down for the time being. Pretty much the same problem, no speedo, no tach, no lights, then no running. When it would cool off you could restart if you had enough charge left, but not for long. Got er home & broke out the meter on it after I charged the battery. All looked good for about 20 minutes or so. Then I heard a snap, click, pop, whatever you want to call it, but if I didn't have the seat off it I probably wouldn't have heard it. Grabbed the meter & sure enough the battery had just started heading south in a hurry. Got it to the shop & they're saying its probably the wire harness. Pulled the main fuse & said its discolored & pretty much melted up as much as it could be, but it didn't pop completely. So at this point they're waiting to hear back from the company, as to what parts are going to be sent & how to handle this.
BTW mine is an 02 CE, & until this happened I didn't have one electrical problem since installing & religously using a bettery tender. I'll post up more later as I go thru this process.

Forgot to add. Since it had the original battery, I replaced it with a new one for my own peace of mind. However I charged up the old one & its still holding a charge 3 weeks later. So your battery could be alright. In all the times I've had the bike serviced at the dealership I bought it from, I was never informed of a wire harness problem/defect, or was it ever replaced. This definitely sounds like the same problem you're having.

DaytonaNewbie - wires don't just fry themselves without a driving force
I would believe you have same issue with the rect/reg & probably also the stator as it has continued to be run in that condition.
If it's a dealer & they replace with OEM parts stay tuned for big sticker shock.

Well I took it to the shop today stator tested good, but the regulator is toast literally it was melted and bubbled up on the back so needless to say needs to be replaced. The dealer didn't have any listing of the recall on my bike said it was already done or there wasnt one. Anyway the shop is ordering me a new regulator aftermarket for $120 instead of dealer price of 350. So the problem should be solved once the part is in and plugged in. I should be riding next weekend. The battery tested good as well so I got pretty lucky only toasted the regulator. Thanks for the help to everyone that posted.

When I got my TBS (used; just under the two year warranty limit) it had the classic symptom of a poor ground for the instruments. I took it to Foothills BMW and asked them to look up the TSB for this issue (I was in for several fixes). They called GA and got the answer. Otherwise they were unaware of any problems. Don't know if you are at Erico or Foothills. They can always query GA for the issue.
