StaggerLee- The early modular bikes like the Trident 750 in question have metal tanks, but you still have to wonder what they've done to fix it....

Pauldixon- If they've billed you $1200 & the problem still isn't fixed, well, if it was me I'd be flipping a coin to decide whether to get in touch with the local constabulary or grab a tire iron.... It's possible you need a new tank, but they bloody well ought to refund what you paid to have yours fixed.

I would try to make this mechanic do the right thing, since you're already in for so much. After that, I'd start looking for a better garage!

Cheers,
-Kit

My Trident has a steel petrol tank, I have just checked by sticking a magnet to it.

The tank on my bike is (was) painted internally, this paint flakes off. When I re-fuel the thing (a frequent occurrence) flakes of paint can be seen swirling around in the tank. Coincidentally, whenever I have checked the fuel filters in the carburettor junctions they have been clogged with red gunge. That may be the source of the muck in your carbs.

'Rotten' fuel tank sounds a bit vague, could you explain further?

Secondhand parts for these bikes often show up on eBay. Whole bikes can be had for what seems like very low prices.

here is a link to a fuel tank for sale; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LOOK-GENUINE-TRIUMPH-TRIDENT-750-T309-FUEL-PETROL-TANK_W0QQitemZ320232838592QQihZ011QQcategoryZ10486 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Fixing the tank the first time should have included either a stripping of the interior or coating it with a liner (commonly done to older machines).

The saga continues

Now they have fitted the tank - but not before they decided to fit new carb needles (without asking me first) they have taken it for a test ride and are now saying its a little better!, but not right so they are adjusting the carb settings - what on earth is going on ? how much more do they expect me to spend. When they handed the bike back to me origianlly it didn't need new needles - now it does! They saidit needs a new tank (we supply one we managed to track down) now the bike still isn't right. I'm about to go touring in France/Spain soon and it looks like I might not be able to go.

Where do I stand with refusing to pay any onwards labour charges? they have told me once it is fixed but it wasn't and still isn't right - where do I go from here??
