K&N Filter Maintenance

I'm still a new rider and was showing my friend my bike. I had told him that when I bought the bike it had some mods done, D&D pipes, air box removed & replaced with K&N filters. He asked me if I was doing routine maintenance on the filters. I had no idea what he was talking about. Is this something that I need to do on my own in-between regularly scheduled maintenance?

Thanks

K&N makes a filter cleaning and recharge kit. It has a cleaning solvent and spray oil.
Filters should be cleaned periodically, as cafecruzin said depending on conditions. I clean mine when they start to lose their pink-ish color.
How I like them to look:

In my opinion, these are an example of filters way too dirty:

You can purchase the cleaning/oiling kit at most auto parts stores.

A little off topic... but is the K&N recharge kit ok to use on UNI (foam) filters?

Don't use the K&N kit on the Uni (or any other foam) filters. K&N filters are cotton & use different solvents.

I have some PJ-1 filter cleaner & oil. I think I might have gotten it from Dennis Kirk, but I don't really remember as it's been kicking around for a couple years. It came as a twin-pack of aerosol cans, 1 cleaner & 1 oil.

Cheers, HTH,

Those are just starting to work....

Once a year at the most is enough to clean a K & N....They work better as they get dirty, and DO NOT require cleaning until the wire mesh is no longer visible on the filter.

I sold K & N for many years in the UK before moving to the USA.

You may wanna check out the FAQ section on the K & N site.

But, here's the relevant section direct from their site...

4. How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.

Hope this clears it up a little.
