On another note, I sent some of the pics to a Gent who said the damage and failure of the casting might be due to the starter trying to engage while the engine is running and there could be a fault in the electrical system that allowed this to happen.

I haven't had time to check into any of that yet...anyone know if thats possible with the wiring/safety setup on these bikes?

also here's a link to the picasa web album with a couple more pics.

Actually a kick start would not have made a difference. The starter gear rides between the bendix and the crank gear. When the starter gear is thrown out of position, it binds and the engine will lock up. Just be glad that it didn't happen while you was riding. When replacing the cases, they will find it in the pump transfer pickup/plenum.

I wanted the kickstarter after I put it back together so I could ride it to work.

Thanks for the info I will post if I find it or if I find out that they do.

Thumbs up It's baaaack

Got my Speedy back from the shop on Monday.

Ridenow/Cycle riders Orlando did the work...Great customer service from Chris in the service center and mechanical work by Coi who did the work on the engine including a valve recut to give me 220#'s of compression

All seems well but I've only rode it home and have had no time to ride it anymore.

Thanks again to Triumph for fixing this as a warranty issue even though it was 6 months out of the stated warranty period.

I have had a couple of the wavy washers fracture and discovered the pieces when subsequently tearing the engine down for race freshening. The pieces were at the bottom of the side case where they could do no harm, but I suppose if a piece got in between the gears it would cause the sort of fracture your engine experienced. My engine is exposed to very severe racing conditions that could have led to premature fracture of these washers, and probably will not be a problem in non-abused engines. Heads up to check this washer every time you have the clutch cover off, however.

Interesting. I've had precisely that happen on an aprilia RSV motor. opened up the case to find the crankcase shattered... second motor had had a sprag repair, but not done properly and the flywheel fell off the end of the crank destroying the end. my third motor has oil pressure problems... either oil pump/by-pass or shell bearings... nightmare!

thrux351,
Good info. Thanks for sharing that it's a good inspection tip.

The wavy washer was still in one piece on mine(you can see it laying in the clutch cover in the pics) but maybe if it gets weak it could allow enough wobble to fracture the castings in the earlier cases.

bonnieblackinfl,
I did have the "pin"/starter shaft and I've added a pic to the picasa web album of the starter gear with the shaft.

I've got 500 on it now since I got it back and will be taking it in for an after break/rebreak in oil change. It seems like it's going to be fine.

Here's a link to another victim to starter shaft race castings breakage...just for interest's sake, what was the weight of engine oil you were using at the time of breakage, and was the engine dead cold, or was it warm?

Tell that to BMW, concerning their final drive and fuel line quick-disconnect failures.

Good on Triumph for stepping up to cover an out of warranty problem.

Post Mobile racing T

Thanks for the info singring

I had/have a service agreement with the dealer(was a req for the financing I got at the time) so it was(or should have been) running the mobile racing t that Triumph calls for.

It was dead cold when I went to start it to be on my way to work. Two cranks and then grrrrrrrrrrrrindCLUNK then just the fast whining of the starter engaging nothing but air.
it had been sounding odd(starter running normal then binding a bit and then starting normal) thought it was the starter going bad or maybe the battery being low and not cranking the starter hard enough...turns out it was the shaft letting the gear bind.

In my case the gear was wedged solid against the case when it let go completely so a kick starter would not have gotten me going without taking the clutch cover and everything else off to get the gear etc out of the way.

here are more posts describing the same problem or in one case the problem almost happening due to the replacement of the clutch cover with a chrome piece and not getting the shaft and washer aligned correctly.
