A question of function?

I've got a friend that's wanting to mod his bike (UJM 750cc)

he wants to chip it and put a power commander in it. I was under the idea that a chip was just a remapped fuel/air/rev limiter deal but was static. where the power commander allowed you to adjust the fuel/air/rev? how far off am I?

My understanding of the PowerCommander is that it sits between the ECU and the sensors. It gets the input from the sensors, and then lies to the ECU. You can adjust how much it is lying. And it doesn't necessarily process all of the sensor inputs.

How old is this UJM 750? Is it even fuel injected? If it's not fuel injected, good luck finding a PC for it. It's helpful to actually give useful information, rather than saying "I have a bike, and I want it to go faster. Should I PC it?"

Not my bike, it's a 2002 or 2003. I don't know much about it, but it seemed odd that you'd want to put a chip (enhances performance) and a PC (enhances performance the same way?) That's why I was asking. I wasn't asking if you can, but why would you? I've got a 07 Bonnie & have no need of a power commander. I was just trying to save my buddy from wasting his time/money. It also would have served to educate me about something I'm not "in the know" about, in the eventuality that I get a fuel injected bike.

I'm still getting used to these new-fangled 'lectric carburetors, but here's my understanding of it:

Chip: New fuel map / tune. Probably corrects for EPA lean condition, can't be tweaked or adjusted.

Power Commander: Semi-adjustable tuning computer. Can be tweaked & adjusted within limits.

TuneBoy: Fully adjustable tuning computer. Allows the widest range of adjustments & is able to adjust some parameters that the other options can't.

I'm kinda kicking around the idea of getting a TuneBoy, but it's a little pricey for me right now.

Just to be perfectly clear, you are correct. The chip & the PC basically do the same thing.

Cheers,
-Kit

thanks for the input. so using both of them is kinda redundant, good to know.
