Low idle rattle....

Hi folk's.

I did a search on death rattle and it did not seem to fit what my bike is doing.

First I got the bike about a month a go. It's a Sprint ST955 01.
I decided to go threw her and check every thing out on her do to the fact that the last owner did not know where or when the last servce was done.

Here's what's it was doing before I did some maint:

*Idle was going up and down about 200 rpm ,idling rough.

*There is a rattle after the bike warm's up- only at idle.

It has a K/N air filter and a after market exhaust, although I can't tell you what kind of exhaust it is.
No power comander.

I replaced the plug's cleaned the air filter.
I checked the timing chain and valve lash- all good.
Did a thottle body sync, bike idles fine now.

When you start the bike in the morning, when it is cold, the bike is quite and runs fine. As the bike warms up and is sitting there idling the rattle starts.
After it is warm and you go to take off from a stop there is a ping or two from the motor. Other than that any thing above a idle the motor is quite in the higher RPM above idle.

Here's what I'm thinking:
The thottle bodies where 6 points off from each other, the are even now across the board and took care of the rough idling problem.

I think that after the air filter and exhaust change that the ECU was never remaped and the motor may be running real lean after it is warmed up.
When the auto-o-matic choke comes on, when cold, it is getting lots of fuel and is happy. As soon as it kickes off it goes lean.

Does this sound about right??

The motor pulls strong and has 26000 on it. Does not burn or leak oil.

Thanks for your input.........

Kurt

The '01 dosent have an "auto-o-matic" choke, nor an 02 sensor. The EMS pulls all engine data from throttle position sensor, airbox temprature, and airbox pressure, and engine RPM, it then calculates fuel deliver based on pre mapped data. If a K&N and after market pipe were installed and run on the stock EMS tune, you may run into a lean condition. Dealer can hook you up and check in just a few minutes.

I did take it to the dealer. They said that if it never had been remaped that it would be running lean, I asked them to remap.........the bike is very happy now.
The low idle rattle I was told by the dealer is something the Truimph bikes do.
I have rode liter bike all my life so this is going to take a little getting use too.

Thanks for the reply....

My bike also has a idle rattle. But I believe that it is the clutch. It only rattles when in neutral and the lever is out.
