Diagnosis for my ailing Legend?
Here is what I've done recently to my 1999 Legend:
1. Removed & re-installed reat tire/wheel (to fix a flat)
2. Installed flyscreen
3. Installed fork protectors
4. Detailed bike with Honda cleaner/polish
Here is what it's now 'doing'":
During a 60 mile ride last sunday, I seemed to notice a 'hot' engine smell. I figured it was the smell of Honda polish getting hot on the engine cases.
As I was riding, I noticed the tach was acting funny. Around 3500 rpm, it did a little 'jumpy' thing, fluctuating 200-300 rpms. This concerned me because shortly after I bought the bike in '05, when a coil failed, it caused the tach needle to swing all over the place.
The engine was not missing but it did seem to be a little 'rough', nothing I could really put my finger on, though. The movement of the tach needle made me wonder if the clutch is slipping. I barely rode above 55 mph.
When I arrived at my destination and parked the bike and turned it off, the cooling fan was running. This is the FIRST time it has come on since I owned the bike (I've put on over 7000 miles). In fact, previously, I wondered if the fan even worked.
On the ride home I still smelled 'hot engine' and it stalled once, when I was stopped at a light.
Yesterday I started it up and let it run for a few minutes. It seemed fine, but the hot engine smell was there. I turned it off for a couple of minutes. I re-started it and let it run a couple more minutes. When I shut it off, the fan came on again. I have a tiny oil leak on the right side of the engine and the minute amount of oil on the lower part of the engine was smoking - it was that hot!
My oil level seems fine but the coolant does seem a bit low. The oil leak only occurs when the bike is running; neither the oil or coolant leak on my garage floor.
Anyone care to offer a diagnosis?
