The Haynes Manual goes on about 20w/50 fork oil for the late model Adventurer. Can this be right? Went to my local oil distributor (Morris, British bike=British oil) and their book recomends 20wt oil. Their selection included 5, 10, 15 and 20wt oils on the shelf. I have gone for the 15wt oil (2 x 1 litre packs). Have I made the right decision and have I sufficient quantity?

I've never heard of a "multi-weight" oil for forks. You can't go wrong with what you are doing. The ride (dampening) will either be too stiff,right on, or too soft for your liking and you can adjust the oil weight accordingly.

Stiffer ride - go to a heavier weight oil
Softer ride - go to a "lighter" weight oil

It is a Haynes manual, There is not any such thing as multigrade fork oil, chances are 99% is is a typical mistake haynes are famous for them. However I had a suzuki once that in the factory manual called for using 10w-40 in the forks. I think it was the 1981 GSX250 TSCC. I have also seen a friend that had a Kaw that specified 10w-40 car oil in the forks so it may be correct. if in doubt call your local dealer.

My factory manual calls for 15W oil. Fill to 109mm below the top of the fork legs w/ forks completely compressed & springs out.

My Haynes agrees, right through VIN 43509. It specifies 10W20 at 126mm for VIN 43510 & up.

My factory manual was published well before VIN 43510.

10W20 is a real grade, though not necessarily easy to find. Repsol still makes it, AFAIK. Most people seem to substitute 10W, though some use 15W.
