backfires

My TBA sometimes backfires when it starts. It sounds cool, but should I be concerned? When a bike backfires does this mean its running rich, does it mean its running lean, or does it just mean it’s a cool freaking bike?

Other Motorcycle: one is enough but I'd love a thruxton just to use for cafe racing.
Extra Motorcycle: nah
now only the rider backfires

My T100 backfired quite a deal whilst it still had the air injection fitted. Having removed it, the backfiring has been reduced to almost zero. it also seems to run so much smoother.

The AI is removed. It doesn't backfire every time it starts just sometimes. I do think its cool, but I just want to make sure it isn't a symptom of something else.

It isn't normal for that to be happening. It means it's a cool freaking bike in need of a tune up. Could be your mix screw setting, starting procedure or plugs. Valve timing issues, air leaks & out of balance carbs can also cause backfiring. Backfiring usually denotes a lean issue.

Backfires

Hey Kem,
Usually when it backfires at startup it is because you are applying throttle when none is required.
Pull the choke out about half-way and stay off the throttle.
See if that helps. If not, something else is going on.
Backfires can blow holes in your airbox so keep an eye on it.

yep, same thing Agogel said. I found I was applying throttle when I didn't know it. bang, blow up the airbox.
