Hi all, I'm new here and I gotta tell you...this is a great site.

I just bought a '69 Triumph Chopper (1st Triumph) and I've got a really stupid question about oil levels in the primary and the gearbox.

In the manual (Haynes) it says for the primary;

"Check chain case oil content regularly and top up when necessary"

Surely they don't mean to fill it up to the top ??? How do I tell where the "top up" point is ???

and for the gearbox;

"Do not neglect to check oil level in gearbox. Low oil content causes rapid wear"

No kidding...but again, it gives me no reference point as to where "full" is. On my truck (UD) tranny I take out the side plug and stick my finger in and down...if it comes out wet, I'm good to go. Come to think of it, the same thing works well on my old lady...but I don't want to take any chances with my 1st Classic.

Can someone give me a clue ???

As always, get a repair manual because that'll tell you how to check the levels or, better still, the proper amount to add to each component along with the proper grade. I believe the gearbox is 500cc of EP90 and the primary is 200cc of 20/20W. The engine may breath through the primary case on the 69 like on the 70, and if it does, the oil level will be maintained by the vent hole to the crankcase; and that means that whatever you're using in the engine for oil will get into the primary case as well. I've never had a problem with it and neither has anyone I know with this system. There are level screws on both components, but, they can strip very easily and I choose not to use them. Again, get a manual, it is critical!!

The 69 was one of the best: Jim
