After adding in a small amount of air to my rear Metzler tire (for what was a small leak) a significant leak erupted out of the valve stem itself. Rather then lose all of the air in the tire, I screwed the valve stem cover back on and that seems to have stopped the leak for now. Question is, do I need a new tire or is this an easy valve stem fix?
Hopefully I've been able to describe the problem properly, I'm an accountant not a mechanic, but for now I've been able to steer away from the term "doo-hickey" ;-)

Any auto store should have valve stem wrenches for sale. It sounds like your valve is loose inside the stem. It could also be a defective valve, in which case it would need replacement. The same auto shop should have valves as well, probably next to the stem wrenches.

It could be something worse that would require replacement of the tire, but it sounds like it's probably just a loose or broken valve. (Of course, do keep in mind that I'm an IT guy, not a mechanic... :wink: )

The valve stem is not connected to the tire., it is part of the innertube.

If at worst the valve is defective in some way, the worst would be that you would have to replace the innertube, not the tire.

Try replacing the valve first and see if that fixes it.

Good point, Bob. I always forget that some tires still have tubes!

(And now that I think about it, I guess the valve stem isn't part of the tire on a tubeless setup either...)
