I recently purchased a set of used leather panniers for a Triumph Legend. I'm trying to restore to as close to original condition as I can. For what I've spent so far, it would have been cheaper to buy a set new, but that's another story. Anyway...
I understand that the leather panniers are fixed to the offset rails by leather straps. However, I'm not sure how the saddlebag halves attach to each other under the seat. Are they riveted together? Tied with leather strips? Weaved?
Thanks in advance....Jerry

Mine have overlapping flaps, which have punched holes and are laced together with a leather cord.
TBH I prefer the naked look, but with my wife I have to have the panniers as a substitute handbag for her.
Yesterday I compromised and split them, and just fitted one on the left.

Thanks, Slinky. I don't have a wife so I don't need a substitute handbag.
My fabric panniers are starting to look their age (three years daily exposure to the elements), so I wanted a backup. Also, I've seen a couple of Triumphs with leather bags and I like the look. Besides, I like to keep a can of chain lube, Honda cleaner, some rags and a couple of bungie cords with me wherever I go. It's also a good place to store some extra seat grommets in case they get lost; for some reason, they always seem to pop off whenever I remove the seat.
I bought some leather shoe laces that should do the trick. I should have the bags back from the leather shop in another week or so....Jerry
