I make a weekly run between Santa Rosa and Fortuna CA. The trip takes about 3.5 hours and reaches a maximum altitude of about 1700 feet. I had been making the trip on my BMW F650 GS, but this weekend I made the trip for the first time on my new (to me) 2002 Sprint RS, which had been a dealer demo. It has about 6000 miles on it.

At about the 100 mile mark on both the northward and southward trips the bike crapped out on me. It started missing badly. Both times, I parked it for the night and continued (with only slight problems) in the morning.

The dealer told me that it is probably air in the gas, possibly from overfilling the tank. However, another person who owns two late-model Tigers told me that the problem might be with the computer and be altitude-related. The problems did appear near the high point of the trip in both directions.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Air in the gas - HA HA HA. Your dealer is a commedian!
Get a new dealer or a better mechanic and have the system checked out. It may be a bad sensor or ECU mapping.

Air in the gas from overfilling? That is a new one on me!

As well as sensors and tune codes, check the CO setting. Maybe it is set up wrong at sea level and gets worse at altitude. If the dealer thinks air gets in the fuel from filling your tank too far, then who knows what else he would do. Aside from that, the only other thing I can think of is a clogged fuel filter, but I don't know why it would cause a problem at the exact same place on two different days.
