I'm rebuilding a '96 Sprint and am converting it to a Speed Triple look. Accordingly, I need an upper yoke (triple clamp) that has the mounting points for the classic-style gauges.
I can do this by sourcing an upper yoke from an S3, but I am thinking of using an LSL bar conversion kit to go to a tubular bar. See:
http://www.streetfighters-usa.com/ls..._yokes_tri.htm
Now, for the problem:
The frame I have is a '96 Sprint, but it was missing the front end, so I have located a complete from end from a Super III (yes, it has the carbon goodies and the 6-pot brakes ).
So, I think that the correct solution would be to use the '95-'96 Speed Triple kit from LSL, (comes with the whole new yoke) but I am concerned about any differences in geometry between the Speed Triple and Daytona front ends. Does anyone know if a S3 upper and a Daytona lower will match?
I'm pretty sure that this will be fine, but just thought I'd ask for some input before I spend the big (US) bucks. Any help is much appreciated!
Shaun

I'm not 100% sure, maybe 95%, but I don't think there is any difference in the geometry from the S3 to the Daytona.

Good afternoon, Mr. Beak!
The Speed Triple went to fund the move to our new home, so I now have a project Sprint to play with. Lot's of fun!
Hope all is well with you. Will we see you for the Ucluelet ride?

I just thought I'd tie up a loose end, here. Guess what? There is a difference in geometry! So, after investing in the very expensive LSL kit for the Speed Triple, I then had to go get a Speed Triple lower yoke to go with it. *sigh*
LSL does offer a bar kit for the Daytona (which would have worked) but it uses adaptors instead of a whole new upper yoke. Not as nice, in my opinion.

I'm sorry for the misinformation. I'm surprised to say the least.
What differences do you see? Is the rake different?

where the heck do you find such things - I have been on the lookout for an alternate front end for my Tbird as long as I can remember and I have had very little success. (whine over) :-D

Hinckley,
No worries about the input you gave. I asked for advice and you told me what you thought. You even said that you weren't 100% sure. Can't ask for much more than that!
What was different was that the fore/aft offset between the centre of the steering stem and the fork tubes is shorter for the Speed Triple than on the Super III (by about 1/8", I would estimate). I guess that this would increase wheelbase slightly, and it might also increase trail? I don't think that the rake changes, as I think that this a product of steering head angle, isn't it? I guess you can tell that I'm not a suspension engineer.
In any case, I think that the intention is that this difference gives the Speed Triple quicker handling and the Super III more stability.
Mick,
I literally lucked out on this one. When I first got this project, I started looking everywhere (literally) for parts, and just happeded to call a local bike dismantler on a lark. I had zero hopes that they would have anything, as they really don't stock anything newer than about 1980 (except for Harley stuff).
So, I wasn't surprised whn I called and the guy answering the phone said "Oh, no, we don't have anything that new.". I was surprised, however, when he said "Wait a minute, there's a complete front end from a '96 Triumph 3 here that looks really cool! Ever heard of one of those?".
So I went down to find out what a "Triumph 3" was (expecting a Trident, or something), and was very pleased to discover that they were dismantling an entire Super III! Since then, I've purchased a number of parts, and have steered a few people locally to go get some more.
The best thing is that this place is only about 5 minutes from my house! What are they chances of that?
Shaun
ps: Is there any way I can receive email notification when someone posts to a thread that I have posted to or am interested in? It would be nice to know when there is additional info rather than having to remember which threads I aminvolved in. Thanks.
