I've never done much work with carbs before. Can anyone tell me what to look for in determining what size jets to use and how many shims go under the needles? What does each part do?

InfX708,

There is a really good web page on working with carbs. Unfortunately, I am on vacation and away from home; so I do not have that web site. Maybe another member will post the link for you. If not, I will post it Tuesday when I get home.

I had to come home early to prepare for a visitor named Charley. The website I mentioned is www.frontiernet.net/~pwhitbec/Triumph/carbs0.html. That is a good site Slinky posted also.

I thought about this stuff too. See carbs are a difficult situation to get right. But mainly I would want to see the
thing get better gas mileage. Now the most important about
the gas mileage would be the transmission. Outside of that
is the carburators. The carburators are a precision part. they play a large role in what kind of gas mileage your going
to get. You got your cubic displacement, then your transmission, and lastely your carburators. A motorcycle with a cheap carburator would be similar to you buying a junk
5 dollar cheapie watch somewherer as opposed to buying a
10000 dollar rollex watch. Just weirdly I can tell you that the
engineering involved must be brainwasting. So my advice is
that it all boils down to how much your willing to pay for a
precision carburator so that the dam thing runs smoothly and with the right fuel consumption. I mean the engine chugs along nicely, but wow what the carbs have to handle.
Perhaps as someone said substuting something from a past
other brand design would work. The Japanese had it figured
out well with their brands. And lets face it, Motors have been using carbs for over a hundred years or so. Surely someone must know how to make em better and more precise, right?
