Looking for a good source for a custom bolt. I took off the hideous mirrors on my Scrambler and went with bar ends, however, the mirror held on the front brake reservior. I would need a short bolt - I think a M10x1.25 about 3/4 of an inch long - to replace it. Everything at the auto parts store is too long. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Chrome Bolt

Depending on where you are in Missouri....there are a couple of True Value/Ace hardware stores around St Louis that carry a good assortment of metric and chrome bolts, spacers etc.

get the correct tread size from the auto store. Length can ALWAYS be fixed, as long as the bolt is "too long." Grab yourself a nut that fits the bold also.

Here is what we are going to do. Have a dremel tool? A hack saw will work also. Measure twice, cut once! Figure out how long you need the bolt to be to fasten the part down, but not so long as it bottoms out. Thread on the nut to the point where the bottom of the nut is the max length you want the bolt to be. Start cutting. The bolt will protect the threads, and if you use the dremel you can clean it up nice afterwards too... but that isnt necessary.

Are you sure it's 1.25 (fine) thread? I would have expected 1.5 might be for that location.

Now you have me thinking I measured wrong. I took it to an Auto Zone where they have the various thread dimensions you can compare to - I guess I will check it again to make sure.

I have thought about just cutting a bolt, but I want to find a rounded top that will be less conspicious.

Triumph used to use a black plastic plug for exactly that on the early daytonas and Trophys as the mirrors were mounted on the fairing and not the cylinders. Your dealer should be able to supply some (I bought some a few years back). Alternatively look on mcmaster.com for plastic plugs or bungs.
