Just bought a used 1997 Sprint 900 with Less than 3000 miles. When accelerating slowly through 2,500 to 3,000 RPM's, it sounds like there is something grinding inside the engine. The Dealer has just cleaned and re-balanced the carbs, but it still sounds the same. It is more noticible in gears 1 and 2, but that's because I'm not at such low RPM's in the other gears.
Any Ideas?
Dealer and other Sprint owners say 'no problem'. I spoke to 2 other Sprint owners. One said he had a similar problem and already had 40,000 miles without mishap. The other owner did not know what I was talking about, and did not have the same problem.
By the way, Just got back from the SteamBoat, Colorado RAT ride and road the DEMO Rocket III and the Thruxton. The R3 Rules - Every HD Owner with the courage to test-drive one will have Triumph-envy. There were a few die-hard H-D owners looking at the bike, but declined the demo ride on principle (Helmets were required to Demo Ride!). Those that did ride it went away re-thinking their image.

All the 900 triples do that vibration thing at those revs, it's normal. The best explanation I read for it was something to do with the clutch basket.

It's really not anything to worry about.

This one also worried me but I've had no issues related to it. What I learned is that the balancer shafts operate in this RPM range.

BTW - I also changed my riding style to avoid the noise where possible. Pulling away by feeding in the clutch more gently at 3-4k rpm to keep engine spinning and then changing to 2nd at 4k keeps you out that zone.

I think the engine just likes to be revved a bit higher than you might think.

Sounds and feels much better!
