OK so I've changed, or about to change, every electrical component on my 1969 TR6R using a Mity Max, Boyer Ignition, etc. The only original electrical part is the alternator and that shouldn't care which way I do it.
So I'm relatively sure it will work as a negative ground setup but wanted to bounce the idea off some of you other English Bike enthusists. My reason is to be able to use some of the new LED combination running lights/turn signals.
I would appreciate feedback on what anyone thinks of the idea and whether you know if this has been sucessfully done before.
I would love to hear from you at
watsoncon@knology.net
Ciao for now ........ Ross

errr negative ground? That's how it should be anyway, negative on the mass.

About the LED's, they consume almost nothing, so the generator should be able to cope with that. When mounting do check polarity or you'll fry them.

have fun

I think a '69 TR6 was positive ground originally, but I don't see why it couldn't be converted if you are rewiring the whole thing.

I have rewired old Brit bikes to negative ground using a solid state replacement for the zenor diode. Since the Mity Max does that for you(doesn't it?-it's been years) , you need to find the out if it has polarity requirements. Sorry I don't recall the spec for Mity Max off hand. I THINK it doesn't care. If you do this, be sure and clearly mark your battery leads(dont ask me how I know this)

Check with Bruce Branstad at brillot2000@bulbsthatlast4ever.com. He makes LED stoplight/taillights, turn signals and even modules to turn your turn signals into doubling as running lights for positive and negative ground systems. He's good about tech support, but tell him I said he needs to send schematics with every set of instructions. We aren't all electrical engineers like him.

They're positive ground, but if it's all getting rewired/replaced, I dont' think it'd make a difference. Do you need signals to be legal, or just want them? Kyle

I've got a t120 with a boyer kit and a tympanium wired neg ground works great. For awhile I had it with a Mity max and no Bat. A little harder to start 3-4 kicks. Head light dim at idle and usually stalled if idling and brake lite came on. I've read that the newer stators from Sparx. put out more at low speed curing the problem

From my understanding, they were indeed positive ground. Several manufacturers used the positive ground. The reasoning was to prevent rust and corrosion in the electrical components.
