Hi I know this has been mentioned before by a couple of riders here.
I finally finished my own bike these past days.
A couple of days ago I mounted up an R1 frontend from a 99 to my Sprint Rs 01.
The only thing that had to be done for the R1 forks was to swap the steering stem and bolt it up.
Everything went perfect except for 1 thing.
The R1 forklegs are 720mm's long and the Sprints forklegs are 750mm's long.
So there is a 30mm difference and the R1 clip ons have to be mounted up underneath the triple clamp.
The bike turns very easy but for everyday riding I wouldn't recommend the R1 forks for a frontend mod unless you want it for racing.two more thing are ground clearance and the side stand since it has been lowered it's not as steady and a tip over would be a worry.

Being an ebayholic I also have an R6 fronted and this one has the same length forklegs as the Sprint.
I had another steering stem(Sprint Rs 01)I pressed in to
the lower R6 triple clamp.
I got a new bearing pressed on to the stem and now it's ready to mount up.
We are in luck with the R6 forks from the 99-02 since the upper triple clamp with handle bars from the Triumph is identical in dimensions so its a straight bolt on for the R6 frontend.
With this setup the ignition lock is in it's right place and I should be able to enjoy an upright riding position.
If anyone have any questions feel free to pm me or email me or just post here and I will try to help you out if you do this setup.
Mikey

Sounds like a great mod.

I have considered doing something similar after seeing a newer ST with USD forks.

I too would like to swap for USD forks, but I am unable to do any machining. As well, I am unfamiliar with deminsions/sizes.

Do you know of other USD forks that are 750mm in length? Ie. GSXR, ZX10 or the like?

In addition, If I do find forks with the appropriate length, how about the demension of the triple tree clamps? Could it be possible to do an easy fork swap, or will I need to replace the upper and lower triple tree as well?

Are there any other concerns such as fender, wheel mounting or brake mounting?

Thanks for your insights

You should read this thread about a GSXR forks swap by Kuhlka. It's very detailed and one of our members here sells a kit for this mod as well.

Hi Mikey - congrats on your mod.

The other primary thing to consider with respect to steeing geometry is the offset between the stem & the forks, which also has a profound effect; You can do the math to see what the net result in trail is but I would think the shorter fork length somewhat offsets the also shorter offset?
Calculate the trail to see what the real difference is (of course noting that the rake will also change from 'spec' due to the shorter forks)

edit - as I re-read your post Mikey I'm not sure if the offset changed as you are utilizing original top clamp on theR6?

I'm not that familiar with the Sprint but it sounds like (from your comment about clip-ons below vs above the top clamp) that increased fork length of the original is actually above the top clamp anyway, meaning the net difference really isn't the 30mm? Or was your measurement already accounting for that?

My conversion Here

The problem was with the R1 forks since the were 30 mm shorter compared to the oem forks.
It would be ok for a rider who don't mind riding with a lot of weight on the wrists and a yearly membership to a chiropractor.
If a regular set of handlebars could be mounted up on the R1 triple clamp it would be great like Decosse and Kuhlka did with their conversions
This is what I would like to do in the future. For the time being I decided to use the R6 fork legs and when I compared the upper oem triple to the R6 upper triple I discovered that they were identical and that the Triumph RS triple would mount up to the R6 lower triple with no problem.
The R6 have the clip ons mounted on top of the triple clamp just like the Sprint RS.So everything fit together with no problem and since the RS clip ons are taller than the R6 it's a great riding position.
Another bonus is the calipers from the R6 and R1 imo they are top notch and they are a one piece design.
The only other thing I've done is to change the master cylinder to a 5/8" to get more pressure.
The R1/R6 master cyl is a 14mm just like the oem Triumph master cyl.

Any pics Mikey?

Sounds like you have the thing licked with the R6 top yoke

But is there any possibility you could also just drill the OEM (or aftermarket billet like Vortex) R1 top triple to take a set of risers? I was running my conversion temporarily initially with the OEM GSXR top triple similarly drilled to mount my stock Triumph risers & bars. (see below)
The only handicap was I couldn't mount the ignition or instruments but was quite ridable like that.

Thats exactly what I want to do with the R1 frontend :-D
Where did U buy the risers?
I really like the look of the upside down forks and since my bike is naked apart from a small piece of the upper.I figure it's gonna be a streetfighter/speed3.
I've got a lot of ideas from the speedtriple forum.
I've managed to weasle myself into 2weeks vacation and I'm hoping to be able to get some work done on the bike.

Sorry for delay in reply Mikey - I don't check this forum so frequently as the Speedy forum

Those risers are the OEM Speed Triple ones.
