I've found out that the resevoir under the pillion seat of a 2001 955i Daytona is for the coolant. Looking at it though it doesn't look like there has been any in there, does it need it?

Oh yes it does!!!
Cold bike, fill up the reservoir with a mixture of 50/50 distilled water and anti-freeze up to the min level.
Drive yer bike, when hot the coolant water should be up until max level.
If you do not have enough water in there you are risking (big time) that you will overheat your bike and damage something!!

Not only what SpiderTex says but you better check where the coolant is going because these Bikes should never leak anything.

My bike pukes a bit of coolant when it gets very hot. When it is cold, the coolant level is below min, and if I fill it to min, it blows a bit out of the overflow when it gets very hot. It never has any issues within the radiator itself, so I don't really know why the coolant expands so much. Once it does its blow off (and makes me completely paranoid for a couple of days), it seems to find its own level and doesn't leak anything else. Go figure.

You might want to check if the hoses to the expansion reservoir are correctly connected... if wrong the expanding coolant will be spilled via the overflow hose instead of going in the reservoir...

Nope, it goes up and down normally once it finds its level. It scared me pretty thoroughly when it did it for the first time, so I checked all kinds of things. It just has its own personality sometimes. That said, it ALWAYS has some coolant in the catch bottle. If it didn't have any coolant in there, I would really start to look for the cause a lot more closely.

My Thunderbird I had did the same thing and I used to get just as paranoid. After tearing things apart and checking everything, I just learned to accept it.

Will, I know you've checked but did you "burp" it? THis sounds like there is air in the system somewhere.
I've had to set in some pretty hot construction zones 100' + and never have had cooling issues.

Burping it is the one thing I have not done. It would make sense that there is a bit of air in the system somewhere, since water doesn't expand and contract nearly as much as air. But after a few thousand miles (pushing 32K, to be exact) of the same behavior, I don't really get very excited about it anymore. It doesn't run any hotter than any other Triumph 600, so it doesn't seem to be doing any harm.
