Well, here's another question abut thos sprag clutches.
The story is like this:
Yesterday i went ahead and bought me a '94 Tiger. The bike was in reasonably good shape, apart from a broken sprag clutch. The price was right :-) . I see this as a winter project to replace the sprag.

As it happens I stumbled over an ad a few months ago on a broken engine to a Tiger 98. I talked to the guy selling it, and the only wrong with the engin was the bottom engine block where the sidestand is attached was cracked. I said I would buy the engine, at that time thinking I could use the 6:th gear and the sprag clutch in case my main bike (a tbird 96) ever would need one. When I went to get the engine i recognized it as an fuel injected 885, but bought it anyway.

Well, now as i really need a sprag clutch my question is, does anyone know if it's possible to fit one from a fuel injected engine in a older carbed one?

If I'm lucky it could even be the same part used, probably not but someone maybe knows?

Boy, I would look the head and ignition system fitment over real close. That and the frame moutning. Would think those are the main issues. And the cooling system hose routing. Hmmm....

Maybe I wasnt clear in my post,
what I want to do is to take the sprag clutch from the 1998 fuel injected engine and put in the 1994 carbed engine.
I have looked at the part numbers at bikebandit.com and it sure looks to be the same part. Judging from the exterior of the both engines it also looks similar.

I had a look at BikeBandit as well, & I saw 2 different parts for Tiger sprag clutches with no indication when the part changed. The parts situation seemed unclear to me, so I didn't post anything. I am not an expert on Tigers.

But... Keeping in mind that I'm no expert, here's what I *think* is the case:

I think Triumph changed the sprag clutch early in production, & that the same units will fit any 885 engine. There may be additional parts required to fit a later sprag clutch into an earlier engine.

I don't think they changed the sprag clutch when they put injectors where the carbs used to be.

Good luck, & don't go spending any money on my advice!

Cheers,
-Kit

My concern would be that the '98 sprag is not actually new enough. With regard to my TB, the replacement sprag was beefier than the old one. IIRC, the diameter and teeth were the same but it was thicker.

You may be replacing the old weak sprag with another weak sprag?

Thanks for the input.

I've located the part number on the carbed engine, it's T12210125. It would be nice to get the partnr on a 885i engine to.

I have decided to tear the injected engine apart anyway. I see this as a learning project before I tackle the real one. It also enables me to see if the gear selector and sixth gear would be possible to put in my Tbird, in case that engine ever has to come apart.

About the replacement sprag to be of the weak kind, I don't think I'll have to worry about. After engine # 23707 the sprag got changed, that was early 1996 so I'll figure a '98 one should be OK.

This will be my winter project, so it will take some time before I start. I'm planning to document the whole thing on the net so I'll get back when I got more to tell.

My Trident fiche shows a part change at VIN 23706/23707 as well, but lists both parts as discontinued and shows T1221025 (not T12210125) or T1221030 as the replacement. T1221025 is listed for a 15 tooth starter gear, while T1221030 is for a 13 tooth gear. Sorry, but I have no idea which gear is used in any given motor.

If you're taking the 885i engine apart anyway, I suspect you'll figure it out. :-D

Do let us know how you fare...

Cheers,
-Kit
