Other Motorcycle: Can't afford two!
Extra Motorcycle: Three would be insane
Of course it is possible that they damaged it though I would hope it unlikely. They should know about having to replace that seal when the cover is removed, and also know the procedure for doing so. It is in the shop manual.

If the seal fails you will know as you will get through oil at quite an alarming rate. It will get pumped into the airbox and will seep out leaving puddles every time you stop.

Wait until it's all been cleaned and see if all the smoking etc stops after a week or two, or a good few rides.

Thanks Mick!
It has alredy stopped smoking. THe last two rides I went on (yesterday & today) there was no smoke on start-up, or during the ride. Interesting thing is that the the last 4 times I drained the air box tube, the first two times oil came out, the third time no oil, and the fourth time oil came out. The oil level hansnt changed however, so Im guessing that I got ALOT of oil in the box from it running on its side. My poor bike......

Yes, apparently a lot can get up there. You were very lucky it didn't do a lot of damage.

If it ever happens again Chris (let's hope it doesn't), swich it off, stand it up, and don't restart the bike until you have drained that airbox tube and chased the engine over on the starter with the plugs removed. That will ensure that no damage is done by the oil. If on the other hand you dont get to it quick enough to shut the ignition off and the engine just stops you may be too late. This worst case scenario doesn't seem to happen very often ( I have only heard of 3 cases so far) but it is worth pointing out to people that it can happen, so if the bike is on its left side and running it's paramount that you get to the ignition switch ASAP.

I'll get off my soapbox now :-D

Mick, Thank you for all the replies. I feel less worried that I have damaged my bike and Ill keep you posted as to what is found when the tank is removed and the air box is looked at. Do you by chance know of anyone who makes high flow air filters for the 2002 sprint st? Since I will have the tank and filter out, I may as well change to a less restrictive filter.

Contact Great Bay motorcycles (in the web links) they do K&N filter kits. Ask for Jim in parts and tell him we sent you!
