I'm in the process of adjusting my valve clearances (two exhaust valves are slightly under spec at 12,000 miles) and the cam chain has me stopped.

I've removed the chain tensioner and all the caps holding the cam shafts. Crankshaft is set at TDC. The manual says with the tensioner removed, there should be enough chain slack to let me remove the cam shaft (without removing the sprocket from the shaft). But there's not quite enough slack in the chain. Can anyone help?

Removing the tensioner is enough on the 885 engines, but I have never worked on a 955.

If you are stuck you can unbolt one of the cam sprockets to give you more slack.

Sounds like your chain has gotten doubled up down along the crank or in the tunnel somewhere, just keep working at it from underneath, youll get it. Theres plenty of slack with the tensioner out its just caught up on something.

01,

I think you've identified the problem. At least it makes sense to me.

The manual said to wedge something against the tensioner blade to keep the chain taunt. I thought I did that but now that I know the purpose, I'm sure I didn't do it adequately.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to pull the right hand crankcase cover off to get in there. I've used a coat hanger to poke and probe the chain in the lower crank area from above with no success.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Youll need to pull the crank case cover to line up the crank before you button the top end up anyway. With the cover off, you should be able to get your fingers in behind the timing plate and fiddle with the chain a bit.

01,

By crank case cover, do you mean the small one about 3 inches in diameter? or the large one that's about 6" x 10" and covers most of the side? I don't recall if the '01 has the small cover (specifically for checking the crank TDC location).

I've got the small one off and will try tomorrow to poke around in there without getting my fingers caught.

Thanks.

The '01 doesn't have the small round cover. It sucks. There's no way to turn the engine over with a socket. I get the rear tire off the ground, put the bike in 6th gear, and turn the rear tire. I'm not going to pull the entire primary side cover to adjust the valves.
I've never worked on the '02 and later 955. Sorry I can't help you with first hand info on those PaloAlto.

Well, I couldn't get my small finger or anything useful through the smaller hole so I've taken off the large cover and still can't resolve it. The lower crank sprocket and chain are still not accessable. I guess I'm going to have to go to the local dealer and see if I can talk a real mechanic into a house call. I'll let you know what happens.
