I just recently bought my very first Triumph. I am thoroughly enjoying it. As a newbie to the Truimph family I have a few questions for anyone who can help ease my mind. I bought an '06 Thruxton and it has a slight tick that seems to go away and return at its own leisure. I was not concerned, as every Triumph I test drove seemed to have said tick (save for the Speed Triple). As I put miles on mine it seemed to fade away until the 500 mile oil change. I put Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic 15w-50 and the tick is slowly coming back. It is not very loud but it does bother me a bit. Is this normal? I also noticed that if you follow the manual's capacities for oil you'll overfill it by nearly 12 oz. Is there oil stuck in the cooler? How do you get it all out?
Also, I have a question on the chain freeplay. The manual says it should be roughly 1" to 1 1/2". Is that the outside to outside measurement or the measurement reading from the center of the chain?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out on these issues.

Pull the drain plug and be patient. Preferrably, let it sit overnight. Once the tension breaks in the oil cooler it will drain. These bikes aren't Penzoil 10 minute oil change types.

The measurement is from the outside center of the chain run with the slack in the bottom run. Remove the slack and take your finger and push up on the chain.

I may have a tick too but I pay no attention. There is alot of mechanical noises associated with the valve train but they aren't as noisy as the pre-Hinkley models.

I try to never recommend oils but I do use Amzoil and the engine hasn't destructed yet so it must be okay (despite others experiences, real or imagined).

Also, remove the oil cap where you put the oil in as it's draining to relieve any vaccum effect. As was stated, let it sit a LONG time, overnite is good as was said. You may wanna put a towel over the filler hole to be safe. Also rock the bike back and fourth and more oil will come out because if you leave it on the sidestand or even straight up as on a jack, the oil will tend to catch and pool in certain areas. So you wanna rock it back and fourth to get those areas to drain. I did that many times and each time more oil flowed and it took a lot of that before it stopped flowing.

that tick is kind of annoying - eh. I think a number of folk know it well. It's too slow to be a valve - right? Dealer said not to worry - normal... I think they said it was the cam chain follower or some such. Funny how it comes and goes.
