1969 bonny t120r, bike totally rewired with negative ground. I have designed a completely indestructible ignition system and the one final thing I would like to do is eliminate the battery. I am thinking the system would have to provide at least 5 amps at idle because the head and tail lights must be on. Anyone got any ideas? thanx for reply!

perhaps a magneto to go along with the kickstarter?

maybe sourced from HD sportsters of the 60's variety?

Just throwing out ideas

A magneto would be cool, but they seem to be rare and pricey.

They used to use large size capacitiors for battery elimination. I forget what they were called.. post this in the vintage & veteran forum and you should get some more precise information.

PS a three phase alternator would be a good idea too.

You can look to the custom audio crowd for HUGE caps. they use them to store charges for massive bass hits.

Can you run a 3 phase alternator without a battery? is there a similar unit that acts as a generator??

Are we helping?

Sorry I got back so late but yea! Great help! I like the 3 phase alt idea! Yes it would run. I could split the alt output! Two phases for the engine and the other phase for the lights. Thanx for the cap idea also! Ive been looking for a cap that large but didnt know where to find one. Thanx for the help!

Hi,

Sparx produce a number of enhanced Triumph/BSA Lucas bits for our classics.

It looks like the US Ebay item is the same, and it perhaps would be worth contacting Sparx to find out a local stockist to you?

Ah.......this is a very old post.

Completely bogus idea! Sorry. You'll risk ruining the alternator for no benefit at all.

Nothing wrong with using either a conventional single or three phase alternator (with the correct rectifier and regulator) just as-is. The trick is choosing an electrolytic capacitor of sufficient rating to keep the power relatively ripple-free at idle. Also be aware that the voltage may dip quite a bit at idle, which won't be a huge problem for the lights, but you may find your "indestructible" custom ignition struggling to keep going... or even to fire when merely kick-starting... unless you've designed it to be able to work with lower voltages.
