I have an electrical problem with my 99 sprint ST. the bike keeps on breaking down on me. The problems happen under all sorts of conditions, rain, hail or shine. Symptoms being;
When I turn the ignition on sometimes the Management system and fuel lights don’t come on. Also when this happens the fuel pump doesn’t engage, therefore the bike won’t start. I can flick the switch up to 20 times before I get all systems go. When it does fire it will idle fine for a few minutes and then stop or it will continue to run. When I take it out for a ride I can go for several weeks without any problems or it will breakdown within a kilometer or so. When this happens it will continue to stop within a few K’s each time. The other week I rode for 30kms before it broke down, it stopped at least 10 times on the way home. I have had the bike to my Triumph dealer (140kms away)on many occasions, without success in locating the problem. They have gone through the wiring harness, checked for broken wires, connections, relays and sensors etc, fuel pump but can’t find any faults. On the last occasion that I had the bike at the dealers they put on 500kms without it faulting once. I put on another 400kms without any problems. Then one morning out of the blue it started again. They now suggest that I replace the wiring harness in an effort to fix the problem, but say it’s not 100% chance of fixing it.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced similar problems? Any suggestions in getting to the bottom of the gremlins would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Wayne

Might be worth a try to clean the switch. My '01 had a similar problem last year. After leaving it uncovered in a rain storm, the engine mananagment light stayed lit after I shut the bike off and removed the key. Every thing ran fine and it would start right up, but seemed the switch decided to go south. I cleaned the switch with a couple of healthy blasts of contact cleaner, then applied a liberal dose of WD-40. Problem solved, I've ridden through down pours, sprayed the switch while washing and never a problem since. Good luck.

A Friend had a similar problem, It took forever to find the problem it would always be working when looking at it. Finally found a bad negative battery cable. It looked good and felt pretty solid but power went on and off when jiggling it, then the end popped off in my hand.

Intermittent problems can be really hard to find, they always seem to work when trying to locate them. I usually look far anything obvious then start wiggling***** till it either quits or starts. Then you can trace it from there. Also I don't plug any electrical connectors together without a bit of di-electric grease.

Good luck, check out that negative cable, this one had cracked up where the terminal attached to the cable.
