Hi there.
I've got a 1996 Speed Triple. when i got the bike it was fitted with a special Triumph exhause system, and so instead of the usual twin pipes, it's actually a three-into-one system.
I love the exhaust note, but my MOT tester doesn't ? Now I have to change the can to a more asthmatic (but legal) one. I want to keep the three-into-two pipes, and replace the silencer - ideally with one from the Scorpion range, the trouble is aftermarket can makers only list the standard fittings, and I'm stuck !
As I said the system is a genuine triumph system (although the can is actually a Sebring) with Triumph badges on it. Does anybody know of this fitting, anc can anybody advise on a suitable replacement ?
Cheers

I could be wrong, so don't go buying a new can off the 'net on my word alone, but...

IIRC, the Triumph 3->1 header should work with a stock Triumph (or aftermarket, for that matter) right-hand silencer.

You also might get better responses to this query over in the Vintage Sprint forum. That seems to be where they've exiled the sporty 885 carb people.

HTH,

Hi,

I am sure there are many options for you, but there is perhaps one option if you wanted like for like?

I believe there is a tie-up between Remus and Sebring (their web sites look almost identicle, along with several products). I think you may well find your existing can available under the Remus label in both race and road versions. If you bought the road version (and perhaps a Triumph label) you could maintain the same look, and switch back & forth as you wished?

Just a thought.....

ps. Your ideal - I too hear good reports about the Scorpion cans (and their changable baffle). You could always contact them here in the UK?
I did discuss upgrading my Sprint with my mechanic friend and he suggested the 3-into-1 may be a little too loud with the Scorpion's baffle removed. He recommended staying with the 3-into-2 and fitting a pair of Scorpions (Ovals). I say this as it may well be that your current Sebring "race" can has a bit more silencing ability than the later Scorpion can, perhaps?

Y'know, here's a thought... I have a cheap Mac 2->1 on my girlfriend's KZ400. It came with the bike, & without a baffle. Pretty much the first thing I did after getting the bike running was to order a new baffle from Mac. 398cc parallel twin, & it was so loud without the baffle that it was setting off car alrams!

With the baffle in, it's much quieter but still noticeably louder than the Triumph that displaces more than twice as much. Asking around on the KZ forum, I discovered that baffles are generally packed with copper wool or stainless steel wool (NOT regular steel wool) to reduce sound amplitude.

If the baffle in your current pipe is removeable, you may be able to simply pack it to pass your MOT.

Cheers, HTH,
-Kit

Hi Kit,

Unfortunately BadDog's problem is not just the noise level, to get it through the UK MoT test (our safety/roadworthy annual test). Aftermarket Silencer/Muffler manufacturers have to stamp their cans to say whether their product does or does not conform to noise standards.

Here are some of the checks that will cause a reject in the test:

3. A silencer fitted to a motorcycle first used on or after 1 January 1985 which is not marked with either:

a. the make and type specified by the motorcycle manufacturer (See info column).

b. British Standard classification BSAU 193 or BSAU 193a or an EEC approval number prefixed by a small 'e' marking or an ECE approval number prefixed by a capital E.

c. A silencer marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE', TRACK USE ONLY' or similar words.

Some manufacturers, such as Scorpion, have removable baffles and it is the baffle (I believe) that has the appropriate conformity stamp.

I like your 'lateral thinking' though!

Ciao,
Geoff
