I just got my '04 955i (about 5k miles) back from a dealer service, and theres a noticeable whine which I think is coming from the front wheel at about 40mph. Above this speed the noise gets a higher pitch and is lost in the engine/wind noise. It seems entirely related to road speed.
It's not engine or gearbox or brake related, I can't sense any additional rolling resistance.
Feedback from the Daytona Forum indicates that it may be the speedo drive.
Does anyone have any info on how the speedo drive should be set up ie torque settings etc. or any other useful info.

Before you dive into the speedo drive, check the chain tension - if it's adjusted too tight, the transmission whines.

Recommended tension is 35 - 40mm with the bike on the ground, not on a paddock stand etc.....

Ignore it, and you run the risk of causing premature wear on the output shaft bearings, the sprockets and chain.

Last time my bike was serviced by a dealer, the chain was adjusted too tight.....

Spot on Bob - I backed the chain off & the whine stopped. Many thanks, you saved me a trip back to the dealer. SPW
