On my 1999 Adventurer there is a definite buzz or engine sensation that I can feel at 3000 RPM. It doesn't seem real alarming, but everytime I hit the 3000 RPMs I feel it... in any gear. Is it maybe an inherent resonance in these bikes?
This is my first Triumph and only put 400 miles on it since I got it, so still getting familar with it. (6800 miles on the odometer)

thanks again guys!
Joe

It's normal, they all do that to some extent. On my own bike I only notice it if I am accelerating thru 3000 revs. The harder I accelerate, the more pronounced the buzz. At a steady speed there is no buzz at all.

Forget about it, after a while you will not even notice it.

It is normal behavior on the Triples. It smooths out and all but disapears with more mileage. We describe it as a harmonic vibration. I'll bet you notice no power loss? How many miles do you have?

The 3K buzz is normal and gel grips on the handlebars are quite helpful for reducing the feel of it.

thanks again guys for the replies. I kind of thought it might be some kind of harmonic resonance at that RPM, but wanted to make sure. There isn't any power loss, or anything, just this brief, fleeting minor annoyance- I can easily overlook. I just avoid cruising at 3000 RPM and all is wonderful!

these engines have a counterbalancer that kicks in and out at certain revs (design of the beast) and 3000-3500 is when it senses vibration and cancels it from there on if you throttle back in forth between 3000-3500 you can regulate it and know its doing its job then when you pass 3500rpm it is smooth up untill redline or before depending on how fast and furious youre going

Hi all, the vibration you describe should come in around 2800 revs and minimise around 3800 revs and happens on every triple I've ridden. It's caused by the triple harmonics causing the clutch basket to vibrate; it can't be cured but can be changed or minimized by taking the basket off and shimming the free play out using Triumph shims sold for that purpose. I've done it a few times, it's not difficult if you know your way around a clutch but free play naturaly comes back in time. Hope this helps, cheers, Watty ( Washington, England)

That's interesting Watty, that is the first plausible theory I have heard for the source of the "harmonic"

Mine is so minor I won't be rushing to strip out the clutch, but it's worth bearing in mind.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to remove the balancer from these engines. They must sap a fair bit of power, and a 120 degree triple should be pretty smooth anyway?

A 120 triple should indeed be smooth - but it needs the balancer shaft to sort out the end-to-end vibrations which exist.

See: http://autozine.kyul.net/technical_s...1.htm#Inline-3

I'm NOT an engineer and am happy to be be advised to the contrary, but this article makes sense to me.

NB: The Triumph motors have a 123 firing order rather than the 132 illustrated, but I don't think this makes any difference.
