That was an interesting article. The question is, just how much vibes would be produced without the balancer. Just enough to add character, or Harley type vibes?

Interesting too that in theory a triple needs one balance shaft and a four needs two. My four does not have any, but if anything it is smoother than my triple. It does it by having rubber engine mounts at the front. A low tech solution, but effective.

You're right about the clutch basket. I meant to say in my last post that my local dealer gave me the same explanation some time ago. He also said that Triumph used accept this 'fault' as a warranty job - some bikes had worse vibes than others. I suppose it would be down to the tolerances on each engine. Later on, warranty claims were rejected when it became apparent that the vibes were really just part of the 'character' of the engine and did no harm.

Out of interest, my first '95 T-bird rattled between about 2,100 and 2,500 revs. On the current bike it's from about 2,500 to 3,100 revs. As others have said, I think it tends to smooth out with mileage.
