I'm interested in knowing peoples experience in replacing clutch plates - when, after how many miles, who's did you use ie Barnett..... I know it's not a difficult procedure, but I've seen few threads on this subject - the clutch's seem exemplary in these engines - and what of springs etc...? I guess I'll see who bites! :???:

You really only need to change the clutch plates when the friction plates are worn so thin that the clutch starts slipping, or, depending on how much abuse it gets, if the clutch plates get glazed or warped.

Mileage is no indication, there are too many variables. I have had bikes with 80k on the clock, still on the orignal clutch.

The few times that I have had to replace clutches in the past, I have used EBC. Mainly because they are readily available and cheaper than OEM.

Thanks Slinky - At 75ooo it looks like the clutch is on the way out - a slight slippage as of yet. The original engine failed - I received a short engine from which I inserted the old plates, clutch basket and all. I didn't measure them but they were definitely thin. Anyway EBC are pretty available here, I'll check prices on the Barnet and see what else is out there too. I'll probable get some springs as they seem cheap and readily available. This particular engine's only got a few hundred miles on it and is very strong. I'm beginning to get ready to strip the other - failed main bearings, bits of babbit(?) everywhere in the old engine though so I guess a thorough clean is the order of the day and then a parts hunt. :hammer:

Read EBC's website on their clutch plates. They state that they are NOT compatible with Synthetic oils! Stupid in this day and age if you ask me!

That's nuts I agree - guess it won't be EBC then - great break pads though!

I've got an EBC clutch in my Honda and use synthetic. The mobil 1 car kind. No problems.

its a good idea to change both friction plates and clutch plates since friction plates get glazed has the pad wears out..

I learnt this the expensive way.. eheh
