I have read some threads where RAT members have mentioned that they have changed their own tyres/tires (lets call em hoops).

One of the reasons I got involved with these bikes was because I like tinkering, but have never had a go at changing a bike hoop !

I am keen to have a go at this as the good deals seem to be on mail order hoops. But I dont know how to do it ?! Any advice would be welcome !

What tools are required ?
Is it a one man job ?
what about rim protection (spoked and alloy)
What about the valve ??
What about consumables, ive seen a white coloured sealing goo on newly fitted tyres before now ?
Anything else ??

Thanks in anticipation to all those have a go heroes out there !

Invest in some tire changing tools. (Prybars with a rounded flat end)

When I change my tires I use a "C" clamp, piece of flat metal, and a block of wood to break the tire seal. (squeeze the tire bead toward the center of the rim)

I then use the tire tools to slowly work the tire bead off the rim. You use one tire tool to hold part of the tire bead and the other to work your way around the rim untill it is all off.
The trick here is to make sure that the bead area oposite where your working is kept down in the center of the rim allowing the other side to come out over the rim.

I use a piece of all thread (2ft long threaded rod) bolted to my benchtop and then slip the rim over it through the axle hole to hold the rim in place while I work on it.

As for the valve stem.... most will replace it when they replace the tires. I have an inner tube set-up so when I replace the inner tube the valve stem comes with it.

Hopefully someone will be able to post some photos.
