Hi there, some help for a new owner of a 98 Legend TT 900. I have just purchased the bike and love it but the gear changes are very loud and clunky, is this triumph standard? I was thinking of changing the gear box oil or adding some lubricant but have no idea where to start as I dont have a manual. Can anyone help?
Thanks

How many miles have you got on it? They can be very clunky at first, they seem to loosen up after 10,000 miles or so. Shifting on my Thunderbird is amazingly slick and light.

Just to avoid any confusion, there is no separate gearbox oil on these bikes, the box shares the engine oil.

If the oil needs changing then you will notice a big difference with fresh, good quality engine oil.

Another possibility is that the oil is too heavy. The weight of oil that you run largely depends on the ambient temps in your part of the world.

Thanks! We are approx 15 to 25 degrees depending on day but currently our summer. The bike was recently serviced at a Triumph specialist in NZ so I will check out what the oil was they used, bike has done 20,000 kms.
I had no idea the gearbox shared the engine oil, thanks!

You're welcome..!

If you have 2o/50 oil in there, you would probably notice a big difference if you switched to 10/40 or even 5/40.

Also, you should look at the chain tension- It can make a big difference to gear changing ( and a lot of damage too) if it is out of adjustment.
