I changed the oil in my wifes 2001 Bonneville tonight, using Motul 15W50.

Then I'm cleaning up and noticed the service manual suggests using 10W40.

I checked the '04 Thruxton owners manual which at that time was the same one as the Bonnie/America/Thruxton with a Thruxton specific insert. That book says "Triumph high performance engines should use either 10W40 or 15W50.

So the question is, for the 790cc Bonnie, which is correct; will either work?

Has anyone else used 15W50 on their 790cc?

Thanks!

My manual also has both weights. Because I live in Florida where we rarely have temps below freezing, I run 20W50. If I lived in a colder climate, I would probably run 10W40 in the winter. But 10W would be too thin for the temperatures here. You should be fine with 15W50 year round in CA, depending, of course, on where you are in CA.

Thanks guys!

However, I wonder if your manuals are suggesting 15W50 because the T100 has the 865cc motor...?

I agree with the temp factor though. We live on the coast 20 or so miles north of Malibu. Mild weather typically, but ride inland and the heat jumps. Add to that So. Cal. traffic- yeah, 15W50 sounds good to me

Thanks again!

My t100's have the same engine as does your wife's Bonnie. The T100 got the bigger engine in '05 (I think it was '05).

Carl is correct. The Bonnveville manual was amended to include the 15W50 oil by the time I bought mine in 2002.
