I bought this d@mn thing when i first got my bike and i still cannot seem to get it to click or give or anything when it reached the correct torque. So how do i know i reached it then you ask? Well, i've tried adjusting it to the lowest setting (25 lbs) to tighten the rear axl bolt and even at that low setting it just doesn't give click or whatever it's supposed to do even once i've tightened it to the point where i feel like i'm running out od strength ! I'm sure i'm using it right.....unlock it, set to the correct lb setting, lock it and start tightening.

I feel like i threw away $70 on this thing, so can anyone think of a reason for this? by the way, this is my second one....the first one was bad and went back. And it was months ago and i can't even find the reciept so thats not an option.

Daz,I don`t have a Craftsman, but the one I do have has a very faint click, and feels like a little rocker or something. It will keep on tightening after the "neutral"click so I have to be careful. Since yours is a Craftsman, you shouldn`t need a receipt. If its defective, return it.

Problem is, i don't know that it's defective. But if you're right about no reciept i just might try. I'd trade it in for a cheap beam type and some other tools i could use.

Some torque wrenches are hard to detect when they "click". Especially at a low setting. Try using it on something at a higher setting to get an idea of what it sounds and feels like.
Just don't forget to turn the adjustment down to it's lowest possible setting when finished using it. If you leave it set the springs and mechanism will take a set and be inaccurate.

Daz...put the torque wrench in a vise and exercise it a couple of times over the entire range. Blow off anything below 20 % of full scale because it will not be accurate anyway.

Don't have a vise but i suppose i could practice on the back axl. However i'm not perticularly thrilled having bought a tool i have to practice with to be able to use it !

And as for returning it, i just remembered it's not one of the lifetime guaranteed ones so they won't accept it w/o a reciept. I guess $70 for a f**king tool isn't enough to warrant a lifetime guarantee ! Geez.....

Oh, and by the way....i never mentioned this but i CAN feel it give, but only after i let up on turning it ! And it happens at any amount of tightness. But no give or anything as i'm still pulling and tightening.

Why not take it to the store and ask them to show you how it works.

If they can great. If not they might just change it out for you anyway. Especially if you opt for a cheaper model.

find me a snap on for $70 that hasent been ran over by a tank and I'll take it. however, the craftsman's arent bad for the money. Sears won't give them a lifetime because they don't hold up to abuse to well they"fall" out of calibration very easily unlike snap on or matco. I've broke two in three years a 3/8 inchlbs and a 1/2 drive model but I use mine every day. :hammer:

Daz,

Both of my craftsman torque wrenches (3/8 drive--250 inch-pounds & 3/8 drive--75 foot-pounds) give a very distinctive click when you reach the set value. From your description, it sure sounds like there is something wrong with your wrench. I also would recommend trying to return it for one that works.
