hi guys,

been doing a carb clean on my 96sprint 900 running mikuni carbs, i followed the haynes manual with no probs until i came to do the pilot/idle jet, the manual said screw the jet in and count the turns then when you replace it, turn it back the same number of turns!! well the jets on mine were already screwed right in, and if i tryed to back them off a turn or so they became loose, i`m sure if i left them they would just vibrate out. Now my question is should the jets be screwed right in and if not should there be something to stop the screw just vibrating out .
Please see my earlier questions "poor running 96sprint" on the forums as the jets being fully in may be why the bike ran poorly anyway... please help.

The jet screws have an 'O' ring to seal against the elements [water, dust etc] and a spring. The tension on the spring stops them undoing and falling out.

On my TBS I set my screws out 2 1/2 turns. The spring is still in tension, and the bike seems best at this setting.

Just to be sure: The pilot jet screw is accessed at the front of the carb and from underneath, you cannot see the screw for the shroud around it. I assume you are in the correct place.

You are confusing the pilot jets with the mixture screws. The pilot jets should be screwed all the way in, the mixture screws are variable.

Running with loose pilot jets would cause all kinds of problems.

A head cold can mess you up real bad when it comes to riding a bike...
